Has anyone made their own Cold Air Intake Box?? Already searched

Has anyone made their own cold air intake box? A la M2, Rotary Extreme, Rx7fashion. I am going to try to make my own by making cardboard templates, then cutting the pieces out of aluminum, then welding them together. Maybe I am being stupid, but 400-600 bucks for a aluminum box seems like a hell of a lot of money.

Also, does anyone know what gauge aluminum the airboxes listed above are made out of? Any help on this project would be greatly appreciated. If it works out well enough I may sell a few, but that IF it works. Anyway, thanks for the help.

I did it then ditched it a few months later. It just didn't look as nice as say, the m2s and that was what i was going for. I don't rememeber the gage but i made mine pretty thin.

You got any specs on it, or part numbers for the filters you put inside?

filters would be the same as the regular ones you bolt onto the hard pipes. 2.5" diameter.

Making templates right now. I will post some pics when I get the templates done. I found the part numbers for the CAI boxes. K&N part number RB-0720 (Angled down 5 degrees) and RD-0720 (straight).

how much would you be selling these for? 150$ sounds good to me:)

I made one out of 1/8" aluminum, It worked great & I got a 4x4 sheet of the aluminum for $50, The fabrication was tricky but it looked awesome after I polished it, I had to get rid of it though when I installed my AVC-R because I wanted the solenoid to be on the frame rail so now I dont have one anymore... Oh well...

TwinTriangles:

Do you have a pic of your set-up? I tried fabricating my own box last summer, but didn't have any luck. It's pretty difficult getting the box the right size to fit the filters and still be able to fit under the hood without rubbing.

Yeah, I was thinking about 200 bucks or so. Depening on the cost of materials for the filters, aluminum sheet, and aluminum piping. Any pics of other peoples setups might help too. I need to still finish the back, front, and top templates.

When building one of these keep in mind heat soak issues - for instance, look at Scuderia Sciriani site on a comparison of intakes: the M2 performs worse than the stock at idle, this is why I think M2 made a carbon fibre intake.
You should be clear about what you want to achieve so that you are not dissapointed.
