Has anyone had problems with Rebuilt Turbos

I had my turbos rebuilt in June. I have only put 860 miles on the turbos since. My 93 R1 started smoking when shifting when I was pushing it. I could not figure out the problem so I broke down and brought it to my mechanic. He diagnoses the problem as the primary turbo leaking oil. Luckily it looks like the rebuilder will cover the turbos under warrenty. The mechanic, who specializes in rotaries, mentions that rebuilds of the twins never last very long and it is much better to get a good used set. Has anyone else had repeated problems with rebuilt stock twins? I want to see if my problem was a fluke or if I should look into alternatives to another rebuild. I have no complaint about my mechanic or the rebuilder.

I had trouble with the SR Motorsports upgraded unit about a year ago. Large (12mm) unrepaired cracks, and welds across the gasket sealing surface that were ground with a die grinder, instead of being machined smooth and flat. Needless to say, I returned it uninstalled for a refund of the purchase price (but not the shipping costs). I haven't, and won't buy anything from them since.

I bought new stock units after that.

I would recommend Majestic Turbo in Waco, Texas. I had the wastegate of my new turbos ported there. The shop is clean, the people are knowledgeable, and the turn around time is pretty good. They do have experience with the HT-12's (and of course all other types as well).

I had mine rebuilt twice. First time by Pettit when they were 5 years old. They were OK at the time but the front snail came loose in the housing causing an exhaust leak. So I decided to have them rebuilt at the same time due to their age.

3 years later when I converted to non-seq, I sent them to Majestic in Waco for WG enlargement and turbine clipping.

No problems anytime with them failing or using too much oil.
