has anyone ever seen the overheat exhaust light go on?

just out of curiosity has anyone ever seen the light go on?? I ask because I have never heard of this happening.

I also have never heard of anyone's going off. From what I understand, it really only happens to indicate an issue with blockage in the exhaust, more than likely the CAT

KaiFD3S 09-22-04 02:10 PM

nope...never heard of it going off

ObliqueFD 09-22-04 02:14 PM

Mine went off on my trip to the Rotary Revolution about 2 hours into the the drive there. I just pulled over at a rest stop for a bit and it didn't come back on for the rest of the drive there.

Black97VR4 09-22-04 02:43 PM

If you don't have cats it probably never will go off.

map999 09-22-04 03:01 PM

Mine beeped at the track one time--it went off on one run, that was the last time I heard it.

NewbernD 09-22-04 03:05 PM

Mine would go off on my 1st gen all the time.. the air pump hose was broken and I never knew to fix it back then. Never in the 2nd or 3rd gen.

Skele4door 09-22-04 03:09 PM

Mine went off, but the pre-cat was so clogged that the car would barely run. Pretty easy to diagnose the problem after tow starting it and driving it 300 feet though. Guy that towed me started flashing his lights and yelling that the car was on fire :) The exhaust was so hot that the perforated tube in my fart can muffler was even glowing red.

My old roomate had an '87 base that was REALLY crappy - he bought it for $500 and delivered pizza in it. Engine had bad oil seals, and burned oil pretty bad.

Anyhow, we accidentally put 9's in the leading plug holes. Makes sense, since we both also had TurboII's that we ran all '9s in and we just threw some used plugs in there - he spent as little as possible on that car. Anyhow, the oil fouled out the leading plugs and the car was running on just trailings. Ran SUPER bad, cat would glow WHITE hot and look like the car had neons. Overheat light never came on :).

Really, the only reason for that light was early '80s federal emissions standards on the 2nd gen. On the FD, I guess they figured the car ran so bloody hot that it really needed it.

If nothing else, the PowerFC uses it as a check engine light :).

Yes.

Firstly when I blew my engine and drove too it would drive no more. hence turning a $4,000 rebuild into a $7,500 rebuid.

Oh yeah the Cat got hot. The whole exhaust was glowing bright red. Including the outside of the mufflers.

oh yeah the car then caught fire.

2ndly - Its a warning light on the Apexi Power FC. Tells you if your maxing out your injectors, Knock level etc etc.

rousu 09-22-04 06:42 PM

when you're hot, you're hot

My exhaust warning light lit up several times.
The heat was real, it was affecting the paint and nearby plastic parts.

The suspicion was that there was an intermittant stuck injector hosing excess gas, eventually into the exhaust and cat.

The detective effort never completed, because the engine shortly after showed water in the combustion chamber and needed a remanufactured engine. The overheat could have been some sensor interplay with the farty abused old engine.

Experience: The light may light up, and it may really be telling you about real heat.

My cats (on the 2nd gen) were so clogged that the car had trouble climbing hills... the light never came on.

Mine came on ( not went off) when I drove into my garage and stopped. I heard something leaking, got out and saw an expanding puddle of coolant. Pushed it back out, got the fans running and had the car towed back to PFS for a 2nd look at the coolant leaked fixed a few days prior. That was early August. I still havent seen my car as It went over to get a re-paint after PF gave it another shot. I'll let you know what happens when I drive into my garage later this month. the light DOES work.

In my last 3rd gen I had a napa thermostat that wasn't opening correctly and caused my light to turn on with the annoying buzzer.

Are you speaking of the overheating exhaust or the coolant level alarm?

Damn...that's crucial.

I thought I read somewhere that the light was specifically for the cat...and that somehow if it got too hot, there was something it could do to release all the heat?? It was a few years back...

Is it a warning light, or a check engine light? Cuz until 10 min ago, I never new it had ANY function w/ the PFC, but someone had mentioned (in a diff thread) that it's your check engine light w/ a PFC...(which might make sense, since you can't throw codes w/ the PFC, so I'd assume the stock check engine light wouldn't ever come on). So which is it? Or is it both (basically a "*something* is wrong" light?

This is exactly why I buy these types of parts OEM. filler caps, thermoswitch, thermstats. I'd rather pay 5 times as much than have one of these crucial components go due to low quality.

I had my thermostat get stuck the day after I bought it from autozone. My shit got HOT! luckily it was my truck & not my RX. As for the filler caps: I had replaced them several times because my Rx kept was overflowing coolant from the resevoir tank. Switched to an OEM cap and problem disapeared. Suprise, surprise.

That isnt common, if it went off there is a problem you need to look into.
