Had first track day, comments, etc.
 

Well, I had my first track day with the FD and it was pretty great. I got pretty tired after a lot of driving (total of maybe a little more than an hour and a half), and the drive home sucked, but it was all worthwhile.

Found out that there are at least two items of equipment that make or break your day and those are tires and brakes. My tires are the most godawful tires out there (Bridgestone Eager in the front and Dunlop D60A2 rear), and they couldn't hold the road for anything. My brakes did fare a bit better than the tires, but I think that having bigger rotors/calipers would have helped the situation a lot.

Thunderhill is a great track, and particularly for beginners like me. There's lots of runoff room and very little you can do to crash into anything. My car ran great for all of the sessions (5 or 6 total) and I learned a ton. I do a little track time (Putnam Park) and have been using Yokohama AO32R tires. I leave them on all the time - they do howl at all speeds and ride like hell, but I hate changing tires. They are designed for the track and going to and from the track. They come into their own at the track as they warm up. They get really sticky and you pick up big gobs of rubber if you get off the line.
I run a 93 R1 with only a down pipe, boost gauge and a Pettit AST. I even run stock pads and fluid, but I am going to high temp fluid and better pads next year. The brake fluid is toast and the front pads are shot after a track session.
