To add further information I had a look on the data given by Garrett for their own products...The GT2876R ( used on our 2lt engine ) has a 50lbs map but Garrett says only 480bhp ( not even 500 ) and they were 100% positive that the maps are crank-engine bhp figures and this applies on all their maps for all their turbos.
////////////////yes, hp is at crankk/flywheel////////////
This came from TURBO HELLAS who are the No1 Garrett Distributor for Greece and Turbo Dynamics UK ( England ) who are the same for th

Sorry to post so much info at once but I have too much free time and too many questions to ask...

Howard at what point ( bhp either wheel or engine ) would you advise that it is a good time to replace-upgrade to a Engine stud kit before rotor housing start twisting and flexing???

ie 500bhp or 420whp is safe for OEM long bolts???

Howard Coleman 04-26-13 10:26 PM

really sorry for all the mess recently on the thread.... my doing. just to be clear. hp estimates for turbos from Borg Warner and Garret are at the crank. i also apologise for breaking in to your posts but felt it was important to get the facts straight.

as to studs.

i see very modest but clear indication of plate movement on the motors i disassemble. i did run my motor around 500 for four years w the stock items and they probably work just fine in this area.

i built my current motor w Rotary-Works titanium 10.5mm studs as i expect to make approx 600 rwhp. my go to guy has used the exact item (the street kit) for 2 years at the 1000 hp level.

I'll try to get on the dyno within the next month or so. I'm at about 24psi right now and injecting washer fluid as a safety net, i.e. not tuned on it for power. I have not been professionally tuned but I've beat the hell outta this engine and its going strong so far. I'd like to at least get some numbers though so I can let you guys know.

Howard I had a look at my EGT and AFR and it is as follows

On cruising speeds ( 5th gear - 3500 to 3800 rpm , no boost or just 2-3 psi I have almost 1400-1450 egt )

My AFR while cruising is 14.5 - 16.00

When under load I see 10 ( it could be lower cause the AEM does not read below 10 ) and then build up to 10.9 or 11.2 depending and gear and load

I have come to the conclusion that most turbos with 62mm - 65mm compressor wheel and 0.9-1.0 A/R hotside will wield between 470-500 bhp engine at mamimum 19 psi

I think its down to personal tasty or previous experience to trust your new make.

ie How can I not trust an HKS-GARRETT turbo ( the one I have ) which has been hammered for the last 8 years working from 15 to 23 psi with 100% perfect working order

Then again HKS turbos cost an arm and a leg LOLOL

check this out... if you go to Garrett's website and take a gander at the GT3582r compressor map it has a whole new monster look. you'd swear it wasn't the same wheel.
http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/3...68allcompe.jpg

here's the Garrett map we have all used since the GT35 came out... off ATP's site as of today.

http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/742/gt35r68mm.png

the difference is huge. notice the broader and taller map.

a few comparisons.........
.................................................. old.......................new
at 14.7 psi.................................57............ ............60 pounds air
(max)rotary rwhp......................429..................... ..452

at 20 psi.....................................60.5...... ................64
R rwhp........................................455... ...................482

at max delivery..........................62.............. ............67
R rwhp........................................467... ...................505
psi..............................................2 3.9.......................33

so unless someone sneaked onto the site and switched maps Garrett is currently listing the GT35r at close to 70 pounds of air! my guess is they cranked up a new map. insiders of course are welcome to fill us in.

given the higher numbers it makes me more interested in the GT35 compressor w a larger rotory friendlier turbine wheel... GT3574 perhaps:)

i was going to respond to the recent posts but will get it done tomorrow.

wow on the map.

howard

Never saw an answer to this in this thread but was looking at the maps and realised the new map shows the right hand line at 60 % vs the old map was showing 65% . It's hard to see, but it looks like they didn't get the labels in exactly the right place so is confusing to read. There are still differences there but that explanation does account for a lot of it.

Brettus 05-13-15 06:08 PM

If you follow the 65% line in the new map , it matches the old map perfectly up to approx. 2.4PR . After that there seem to be small advantages going to the ported shroud both at the choke line and in the upper areas of the efficiency islands .

Any dyno sheets on a rotary at higher boost?
