Got my Garfinkle Torque Brace Powder Coated

The torque brace I got from Dr. Garfinkle began rusting after only about 3 months in my car. So I took it off with plans of sanding it down and painting it. A few days before I had noticed an electropainting specialist shop right near where I live, so I decided to stop in to see what they could do about powder coating.

The guy I talked to was great about about it. The shop normaly does much larger jobs, like 50-100 units for big companies, but he said he could sneak my 4 part torque brace in at some point. I got a call back from him today telling me it was ready.

I think it came out great. The paint is really smooth, and I'm really impressed with the powder coating thing. Heres a couple pics. What does everyone think?

I'll post a few pics of it in the car once it stops raining up here.

Looks nice!

Nice..

I just went ahead and just painted mine.. I need to powder coat them..

Garfinkle's brace made a huge difference.. well, I say huge.. because I acturally felt the difference...

Anyhow, Here is a pic from last night.. its crazy looking because I'm re-doing my car.. Garfinkle also polished my water pump, alternator and made the front cover to block air flow.... Thanks Garfinkle!!

I could hear it well with the scoot hood.. but my tials need stronger spring.

It was recommended to me that I run both.. I thought it was little too much..

Really? Can everyone else see the pics? Maybe it's just you...

93BlackFD 04-01-04 02:03 PM

well now they are :D

he laid the powder on a bit thick, and/or he should have hung the part while curing it

that's why you have that orange peel effect to it

no big deal, it is, afterall, a torque brace :) that's black chrome (gunmetal) i assume? does it seem to be cleared?

fastcarfreak 04-01-04 02:18 PM

looks good, might i ask how much he charged you?

Scrapiron7 04-01-04 03:10 PM

You might.

It isn't cleared. You think I should pick up a bottle of clear coat? I don't know much about powdercoating, will this stuff flake off or scratch easily without a few clear coats on it?

It's actually just a flat black. The pic on the black background does make it look gunmetal, but it's really just a flat black. The true color will probably show up a bit more when it's in the car and outdoors.

you have to power clear any powder that contains metallics (chrome, gunmetal, etc)

if you have flatblack, no need to clear

how much did he charge?

What I'd like to know is who *is* "duboisr"? This person always refers to Garfinkle (or his son) in the 3rd person and always talks about him like he/she knows all his business!

Oh ok. Thanks for the info. Would it be helpful to clear coat it anyway? I might as well do it right while I'm doing it.

The first price he mentioned when I walked in the door was $100, which I quickly backed away from. I was hoping to spend about $40-$50 on the coating. I talked to the guy and found out he and I had a bit in common, he knew a bunch of the people where I go to school right down the street from his shop, and the price dropped to $50. We continued talking, and then his boss walked out of the room and the price immediately dropped to $25.

So I left the shop last friday under the assumption that I'd take the brace to my schools machine shop, press out the bushings, and bring it back to him monday, and he'd do it for $25. So when I brought it back monday, he was telling me it'd be $25 at the most. "Great" I'm thinking, it went from $100 to $25, good deal. So when I got a phone call today telling me it was ready, and there was NO CHARGE, I was pretty happy. Since they're used to doing such large jobs, he just threw mine in with another thing that was being coated, and didn't charge me a thing.

Not bad for a free powder coating job, eh?

93BlackFD 04-01-04 10:01 PM

don't clear the flatblack, it will become gloss black :)

Well I was told by someone that duboisr is his wife/girlfriend but I dont know if that was true. I do know that 99.9% of duboisr's posts have the words "Garfinkle has one, call him at yada yada" OR "my mechanic". I sure hope they are related or something since you are right, they talk like they know all about Garfinkle's business.

OneBadRx7 04-01-04 10:10 PM

oh and am I the only one that thinks that front cover looks like ass? looks like it was hacked together in like 10 minutes. I have seen Garfinkles engine bay and its amazing so I know he is capable of much better work than that, maybe he was in a hurry or something.

93BlackFD you better do a good job :D I'll post photos of it when you are done or you can do it if you want.

I must be a weakling. How did you get those bushings out? and 93BlackFD I didn't break it into 4 pieced. I left that part that joins as a T together...didn't even know it came apart :D
