need help, got a couple of questions about motor and tranny

well as i have read over the past few days ive seemed to notice every one talking about the dreaded 5th gear syncro(is it the little crunch i hear when putting it into 5th?) And i am pushing 1.0 bar on my motor and all i have is greddy stock mount, apex i twin filters, dp, high flow cat, fluidine radiator, an engine rebuild at 75 k, and some exhause all down by rx7.com in texas. is it safe to be doing this, i have ran the car pretty hard a couple of times and i had no knocks or pings. Any suggestions, and does anybody no were i can get a wiring scheme for this damn thing, my fans are acting crazy. should i just get the hole tranny rebuilt, i though i saw something about some aftermarket syncros thats would stop them from breaking.

Umm, 14.7 psi = waaaay above fuel cut on the stock ECU, theres no way in hell you're running that without a new ECU.

And no, thats far from safe. I'm surprised your motor hasn't blown yet, but it will soon if you keep running it that lean. Get a boost controller and dial that back down to 10psi till you can get proper fuel and fuel control to be running that kinda boost.

If you don't rebuild the transmission it's going to start trashing the bearings on the mainshaft next.

When the synchro grinds it usually means it's cracked, if it cracks again on the opposite side the two halves will most likely drop into the gears in your tranny then it gets expensive.

Anyone on the forum will tell you that you should worry about not blowing your engine running that many mods without an aftermarket ECU before you worry about your fifth gear synchro.

Get a boost controler or an ECU, and worry about the 5th gear synchro after you have sorted out your fuel problems. (it may seem like you don't have fuel problems but you will)

In the meantime you don't need to slam it into 5th anyway (unless you are doing some crazy top speed racing) 4th, shift into neutral, give it a second, then into fifth. (thats what I did until I could get mine fixed)

Rotary Performance in Garland would not install those mods without an ecu and fuel upgrades? I think he needs to look at his ecu and see what he has, or call RP and ask them.

thanks for all your advice, ive learned to ease into 5th without it grinding so ill ride it until i get the cash to fix it shouldnt be long im going to check out me ecu in a minute to see wut kind it is.

Me too :D

Give it another half year to a year and it'll start going bad - seriously.

teamstealth 11-29-03 11:33 PM

it cant break if i dont grind it! :) lol, but seriously though, they should be replaced, and its on the list of winter projects for me
