It's screwed in on the bottom side of the UIM (above the rats nest).

It's just what the name implies, a sensor that reads the temp of the air in the upper intake manifold for the ECU. As you stand directly infront of the car, it's located UNDERNEATH the left rear portion of the upper intake manifold. Do a search, there are some threads dealing with it's replacement. I know because recently I got the same code. I just ordered the sensor from Ray and Malloy. I'm at work and and can't check the receipt, but as I recall about $44.
From reading some of the threads though, I'm probably going to need a couple of gaskets too. Get the FSM and it'll tell you more. Good luck. Jim

Once you remove the UIM, it's screw into the underside of it. You can't miss it.

I've got code 11 too, and the thermo sensor was delivered from malloy for about 44 bucks.

What are the effects of a bad air intake thermo sensor? Extremely rich running?

I've also recently failed an emissions. Both hydrocarbons and co were high. Possibly just the thermo sensor?

Finally, what are the possible gaskets I should have when removing/replacing the UIM to get at this little bastich? Any good write ups for the UIM r/r?

This is just one of many threads involving the INTAKE AIR THERMOSENSOR under the 3RD GENERATION section when you do a search. It has a picture.

My sensor seems to be intermittent, in that the "check engine" light only occasionally comes on. But when it does, my car runs rich and tends to back-fire a bit. From what I've read here on other posts, that's common and it's probably why you flunked emissions. In a couple of months my car goes into storage, and since it's not a constant problem, hopefully I'll be able to put replacement off until then. Probably change plugs too.

Regarding the gaskets, I think I remember a couple of guys mentioning some gaskets not surviving real well. I'll have to read-up more and check the FSM. Maybe UIM to LIM? Anyone?
