Going from FD to Mazdaspeed3

Won more races

Montego 02-08-21 03:15 PM

Err... congratulations :dunno: but it sounds like your old car wasn't all it could be.

2013 Mazdaspeed3 RX-7

Horsepower: 263 hp
Engine: 2.3 L 4-cylinder
Curb weight: 3,281 lbs
0-60: 5.2 s
1/4 mile: 13.9 s
Weight to Power ratio: 12.47 lb/hp

vs

1993 Mazda RX-7

Horsepower: 255 hp
Engine: 1.3 L Rotary
Curb weight: 2789 lbs
0-60: 4.9 s
1/4 mile: 13.5 s
Weight to Power ratio: 10.93 lb/hp

This is why it is important to always keep up with maintenance.

^Fixed ?
Past posts mention hard hot starts, big fat 18’s and aluminum pedals.
Wondering which you spent your money on before deciding FWD?

All jokes aside, my daily driver FBO Speed3 passes F80 M3's and R35 GTR's on the track. Constant for comparison is that we all run R888R tires. I easily put down 350whp with a conservative tune and still get 30+ mpg's. Only oil changes and basic maintenance needed. Say what you want but I actually believe the Speed3 is one of, if not the best car Mazda has ever made.

Plus it's great to just pack everything up (wife, dog, jack, tools, two 5 gal gas cans, tent, two folding chairs, rug, cooler, food, case of water, etc) at the end of the day and drive away.

Mazdaspeed RX8 ver2 02-09-21 10:51 AM

I'm definitely missing something..

the torque steer is real

Ha! You must've driven one. Upgrading to solid motor mounts was easily one of the greatest mods for the chassis, as well as dropping in a set of Recaro's.

If I may say, it's one thing to drive a car that's easy to drive fast-fast and then quite another to wrestle around a car around that isn't. Not only is the level of skill required higher, it makes for a much more rewarding drivers experience imo, plus it'll always keep your driving chops on point.

Just my opinion but happy to have a friendly match-up at Sonoma Raceway or Laguna Seca to put my words to the test.

Cool story bro.

He’s trolling right? Right?

yes, i worked at a dealership when those came out, so i drove one fairly soon after it came out, and i was driving down 101 between Marsh and Whipple, and dropped into 3rd and floored it, and it changed lanes. i then put it in 6th, and drove it back, and maybe haven't driven one since!

B, my friend and i used to have an Acura Integra as a race car, and one weekend we decided to play with the shocks. you go full stiff, full soft, and then halfway, it calibrates the drivers seat of the pants. so full stiff was undrivable, not surprising. full soft though was easier to drive, and more consistent. the fastest lap time was set with the shocks stiffer, but it was hard, and with them full soft he could easily run within a tenth or two of the fastest lap the whole race. so yes, easier to drive would get you more consistent lap times, and would probably be faster with an average driver

Why hasn't this stupid thread been deleted? OP trolling with random nonsense comments and no context. And we also have all these people feeding the troll with comments. Ignore and have the mods delete already!

TomU 02-11-21 08:32 PM

Monte Carlo. Seriously

Federighi 02-12-21 10:35 AM

Tom +1 absolutely. I personally love Nascar history, especially the vintage stuff.

Quichedem- While I do agree this post was more or less a 'troll,' the unfortunate truth is that everyone is entitled to their own opinion(s) and the FD isn't the 'most ultimate sports car of all time' regardless of how much we want it to be.

If you're ever in CA I'd be more than happy to meet up on track day for a friendly drive when you finish your build and want to put it through some paces. Just let me know, I'll even let you set the parameters if that makes you feel more comfortable :)

R1chard 02-12-21 11:00 AM

I own both. Pre-pandemic I daily drove the Speed (2010) and took the FD out on the weekends. I work on the FD but outside of a Mazdaspeed CAI, have left the Speed stock. Post pandemic, I rarely drive anywhere, but when I do, it is in the FD. I love both cars but find the FD is more fun. For the record, I track neither.

Funny this thread popped up the night I was doing 3rd and 4th gear pulls tuning.... I had 4 cars mess with me. 2 newer Mustang GT with at least an exhaust (man they sound incredible), a Mazda 3, and a Golf... I pulled on all of them. Not bad considering those stangs have to be at least 500hp...
The 3 was a joke. No idea if he had any mods, but was lowered a bit and was loud. I think the Golf just wanted to see me bolt.
I am sure the handling is excellent as most Mazda are. With evolution in mind I would hope it could beat or at least hang with a car that is old in comparison. Front wheel drive... no thanks, torque steer... no thanks. Cool car, but they are everywhere and nothing special to see. Will they go down in time as one of the coolest cars ever? I wouldn't bet on it. I think it would be a nice daily.
Troll post for sure. You can't compare something like that to an FD. It is an Iconic car. Always will be. No offense to all the 3 lovers out there.

TomU 02-12-21 01:15 PM

Every time i'm driving my FD, some yahoo wants to race. I save my racing for the track

Same thing happened a while ago when i had a Pontiac Lemans dressed as a Goat with a 428. I played (forget what it was against) but knew the road was a speed trap haven. I pulled up after a short run and the other car got popped.

And can we get back on the subject of Monte Carlos

Hahahah......I am not condoning street racing at all... I was just doing pulls and they decided to try to keep up with me. If I got a bad ticket it could cost me my profession. That's why I am trying to keep it to 3rd gear pulls only..... trying.
