glowin precat at idle - normal or not? (searched)

while i was trying to find a leak, i noticed that my precat was glowing. (a downpipe is planned, but it takes a few months) the engine was cold when i started it. while i let it idle, it noticed the orange glowing cat.
now is this a clogged precat, or just normal (rich coldstart + air pump) ?
i searched, some guys had the same symptoms, but i didnt find a clear answer for my question.

Thanks, Chris

it is not normal that your precat is glowing... especially when the engine is still cold when you started... check your precat and catalytic converter... it may have been cloged... bad for the turbo

While waiting for your new downpipe, you can take out the honeycomb... that should help...

Btw, what brand did you buy?

turborotarypower 02-26-03 10:25 AM

sounds like classic clogged cat to me!

David Hu$tlerhoff 02-26-03 10:37 AM

damn :(
i noticed a lack of power, it seemed to be a bit "lazy" the last ~ 300 miles.
did that harm the engine (didnt WOT it often, i like to cruise  )
i decided to get a hks dp, it's the best bang for the buck over here.

change the precat out asap! don't want to hurt the engine!

David Hu$tlerhoff 02-26-03 11:24 AM

no prob, it's not my daily driver
the thing that scaresme is: for how long did i drive with a clogged cat? :(

Cihuuy 02-26-03 11:37 AM

did u check the catalytic converter?? the sooner the better dude...

David Hu$tlerhoff 02-26-03 11:44 AM

Cihuuy, sorry maybe i misunderstand something:
do u mean with cat. converter the main cat?
*feels dumb*

Cihuuy 02-26-03 11:57 AM

yup yup... i meant the main cat... ;)

In usa, the precat and main cat tend to get cloged wiv age... but where i live, the precat is a downpipe allready... :D i dont know in Germany tho!?!

Cihuuy ok now i got it ;) ....how can i check the main cat?
drive normally, and look under the car if the main cat also glows?
btw: ~35000 orig. miles on my car so far, just for additional info

Damn and the pre cat is already clogged, what a mind blower!

David Hu$tlerhoff 02-26-03 01:10 PM

Street King, u reffering to the mileage?
that bugs me personally, i think a cat should last a bit longer

DCrosby 02-26-03 02:04 PM

HKS is what I have and from what I did as far as reasearch, I found that the cast Iron Mount that mates to the turbo lastst the longest, since the heating and cooling is really rough on the welded type...

in my car the main cat isnt glowing is the downpipe when my car still cold ,i mean i just start the car and in less than 2 minutes the downpipe its glowing its normal or not?????

GoRacer 02-26-03 05:50 PM

You should have the air pump checked. The glowing DP is most likely a resulted symptom of premature wear do to air pump failure and not the cause of the problem itself.

No, I don't beleive your DP should be glowing red on warm up. I've seen that on my buddy's and he had a clogged cat' and bad air pump. Mine does not glow even after sprited freeway runs or drags launches.
