Glass Moonroof for a '93

I need to replace the Metal Moonroof in my '93 Black RX7 and would like to change it to glass.....

Does a '94 Glass Roof fit a '93?
How involved is it to change it?

You could switch it out.

thecybernaut 04-20-04 01:04 PM

I know I can switch it out....

How involved is it? Is it an exact swap? Are there additional parts or gaskets needed, etc.? Has anyone done this?

Trust me you don't want to switch to a glass roof. The sun comes in from all angles and it is quite bad. Almost as bad as if you have it open.

There is a insert to block the sun that should have come with the car, or maybe an option that is impossible to get today. I tried calling and going into Madza dealers and asking for it but they basically said you had to buy the whole sunroof (around $500.00) to get the probably 40 dollar insert. And if I had the insert I would use it all the time. I see no benefit to a glass roof.

The painted roof looks better anyway, it doesn't have protruding rubber surrounding the glass like our glass roofs do.

What is the reason behind wanting glass?

Funny my roof is glass...but has that cover so when its closed its blocked off entirely, and i'm not aware that cover comes off. Makes me think what is the point of it being glass?

I have a glass moonroof and have absolutely no problems with the sun coming through. I love the glass roof. The tinting is so dark that it is NEVER a problem. Maybe it is beacause I live in Seattle and the sun never shines.:p: Seriously though even in full sunshine it is not a problem. When it is open, thats a different story.

Am i missing something with my roof does the black panel opposite the glass in the interior move or is removable?

 Yes it does. There are 2 clips that use just press when the sunroof is tilted, and the cover will come down. That was the first thing I did in my car when I bought it. If I have a moonroof, I want to see out of it.

And I don't know how you can complain about the sun coming in. I daily drive mine in So Cal and I NEVER have a problem with sun coming in. The stock glass is comparable to limo tint. At night, it is so dark, you can't see shit out of it.

OK, back to the original question:

What is involved in putting a '94 glass moonroof into a '93 black RX7?

Is it a direct swap?

No.

what about getting the hardtop fitted w/ a factory sun/moonroof?

anyone know how much that would cost? (parts and labor of course)

I have no problem with my glass sunroof either. I think I would have rather have a glass roof than a metal roof. The glass is so tinted that the sun is never a problem.

Ok, then all of you that don't want your insert give me a price and I will buy it.

What do you mean...."No".

novadan67 04-20-04 03:50 PM

My car didn't have the cover when I bought it, I didn't even know it was an option. Does anyone have a pic of what it looks like?

Fumanchu 04-20-04 03:56 PM

Pic of the one I sold.

No, it is not a direct swap.

I like the MoonRoof on my Touring. Its tinted well enough where I dont use the cover that Fumanchu shows in his last post.

4CN Air 04-20-04 05:38 PM

what is required to do the swap?

WHAT!!!

I'm in SoCal and it's just as hot as Texas. Once I removed the cover i never reinstalled it. Well, except once when I left it at the airport over the weekend. The regular sunroof sucks :bootyshak . I have one on my CRX and if I open it, it's too freeki hot and i'm tan enough as it is. So I can't enjoy it most of the time. The tint on the glass moonroof is like limo shade and is the reason I wanted a '94.

henrybui 04-20-04 07:07 PM

by any chance does anybody know if its the same dimensions are the same for the glass versus the metal outside. and the inside if the lining is the same?

forcefed1 04-20-04 08:47 PM

to answer your question. it's plug and play.
get teh full sunroof assembly with the cover and you can unbolt your metal one easily once you remove the headliner and badda bing badda boop it's in there. If I recall the only thing you'll have to do is cap off the front drain holes in the glass roof package since the metal 93 roofs only have drains in the rear. or if you really want to get technical you could maybe swap teh frame from teh 4 drain 94 glass style to teh 2 drain 93 metal style and it'll all work.

Fd3BOOST 04-20-04 09:22 PM

I took the metal skin off mine and dropped the glass in its place and tightened it down. It fit like a glove and took about 10 min.
