Getting a new clutch
 

I'm rebuilding my tranny and since it's out I'm going to just replace my clutch. I don't need anything crazy like a quadruple plate. I would however like something fairly strong and defiantly a street strip. I do drive my 7 on a regular bases and a puck clutch would suck in LA traffic. Just wanted some info on ACT, compared to Excedy, and so on. I do like a stiff clutch peddle. Anyways any info you can give would be greatly appreciated.

It seems to me there aren't many 'really bad' or 'really good' clutches out there. Just too much or too little clutch.

What HP do you intend for it to support?

No more then 375, and it might be a while before i get there. I just wanted imput on what people have and if the like or don't like it.

I have an ACT SS disk with ACT HD pressure plate. Not to grabby, and not too stiff for driving around town. You should consider a light flighwheel at the same time. Many times you find a "package" for around $800 that includes disk, pressure plate, flywheel, T.O./pilot bearings, and an alignment tool.

Next time you are in SLO, let me know, and you can feel the pedal to see if you like it.

Sorry, I don't have a part number. I bought my "kit" when it was on sale at SR Motorsports. The package is the one for the FD, with the HD clutch. Looks like it is on sale for $889. I got mine a couple of years ago, and $800 was a good price (even for a cheap bastard) at that time.

Thanks Adam, i was thinking about the HD clutch. My buddy in FL has that 1 and i liked the feel of it. I didn't know if anyone had a Exedy or the Rally clutch from RX7store. Just wanted to see how people liked it. Yeah i'm finaly going to rebuild my tranny. I was going to have someone else do it but whats the fun in that.

I installed the ACT SS and PP package about 15k ago. My car is just street driven and mostly stock. Maybe just a bit stiffer feel than OEM, but not much. All and all, very happy. I searched alot on this forum and elsewhere before going with the ACT. I never really found anyone that wasn't happy with them for a stock or mildly modded car.
You might want to consider replacing the clutch fork while your in there. I read alot of posts where the old fork broke after installing the upgraded PP. IIRC they're only ~$45.

I sell a ton of the ACT street/strip and the spec clutches. Most popular is the ZX3-HD00 if its a street car.

I also vote for the ACT that Adam recommended. Don't forget to replace the clutch fork while it's out. They always break.

If you're getting a lightweight flywheel and you're mostly driving on the street, I'd recommend getting the 12lb flywheel that SR has instead of the 8.5/9lb flywheel. I have the Racing Beat 9lb and it gets a little annoying in traffic.

Well, I've driven a 5 speed manual since I learned how to drive (Toyota tercel... OK a four speed, honda civic, integra, FC rx7), but the clutch on my FD is pretty damn grabby and stiff (clutch disc):

It has great engagement, but it's pretty unforgiving, IMHO. Or, I just can't drive :)
