Genuine Mazda Oil Filter Color Question

Hello,

I am new to mazda RX-7's. I just bought a 1993. I am going to order some Genuine Mazda oil filters for my car. I had read something about blue vs. black Mazda filters? Is there some certain color of filter I should be looking for? I had heard something like blacks were better than the blues?

I personally have been happy with K&N , Royal Purple . But I do believe the mazda filters are just as good and cheaper as for the color .. I have no idea , But if you need a filter on the spot you can try either of those

I used walmart oil filters and walmart synthetic oil in my FD for over 3yrs with no issues.

I did some searches and found my answer. This info was posted by j9fd3s in another thread:

the OEM filter FAQ. there are several.

the filters come in two sizes short (B6Y1) and tall (JEY0). if you actually went and looked up the part number the tall is for 1980 and earlier, the short is 1981 and later. although the filters will interchange.

shorts:

the JDM filter, made by Toyo Roki, black part number B6Y1-14-302A. this is the best quality filter. they stack the filter media so that there is something like 30% more filter in the same size can than the previous JDM filter (N3Y6 i think). sold in the US thru about 1998, they still come over from grey market suppliers.

the US filter, now white, B6Y1-14-302A-9A. it looks like a decent US built filter. this is what the US dealers currently are supplied. the white really sucks. retail price is $10.25.

the Canadian filter. B6Y1-14-302A-CA. this is the blue one. i've never seen one in person. also $10.24 retail.

tall filters.

there is the japanese made JEY0-14-302A which was supplied until 1998, and still comes over on the grey market, like the B6Y1.

there are two US supplied filters, first is the JEY0-14-302A-9A, which is black, made by tennax.

and G6Y0-14-302-P1, which seems ok, but its white and looks horrid. retail is $7.96

there is also the N3R1-14-302, which is for the 2009+ Rx8. its black, japanese made, list is $9.37

I haven't used a single Mazda filter on any RX-7 I've ever owned or worked on. There's no good reason to.

I run Purolator filters that are for the 2nd gen RX-7, it's a larger filter and screws right on. You can get it at most any auto parts store.

Purolator makes a good filter. Also, I've yet to see anyone say "gee, my engine blew, if only I ran the right oil filter this wouldn't have happened". It's just not the case. Use a good name brand filter and be done with it.

The "NEW" Mazda filters are all black and are made in China..... I just bought 2 a couple weeks back.

I have personaly seen Fram filters blow off someones motor at the local track it made a major mess. The Mazda original filters have been recommended to me by Carlos Lopez from CLR Racing.

I have also used Bosche filters from the local auto parts.... They have been rated real good by many...There was a thread on here were someone actually opened a boat load of filters and did a comparison, if I remember correctly the Bosche and Mobile One ranked real high.

I call Ray and order up 6 at a time, then I am good for a year. They are cheap, I don't recall the price, but less then $10 each for sure. Last year they were black and a bit taller then the black ones I received this year.

For such a cheap price I run OEM filters. Plus the extra touch of Mazda naming on the engine is a good warm fuzzy for me. I have seen spun bearings, and overheated oil system engines torn apart. Not pretty...

Buy the filter size and type you like and then get a can of spray paint of the color you want and your set for at least 20 or so oil changes ! LOL !

as long as your using a quality oil filter such as purolator pureone, royal purple, or k&n getting the oem mazda is not necessary (although I do believe atkins sells 6 packs of oil filters for 30 which are made by the same oem manufacturer).

The original RX7 filters were larger allowing more filter area and lower back pressure. Over time Mazda consolidated their filter line and thus the filter became smaller, not better.
Do not get trapped into thinking all Mazda stuff is better!

Two better filters are:

Purolator PureOne Oil Filters
PL14459: RP = 12-15psi, ht = 2.95, od = 3.15, vol = 22.98. listed for 83 RX7
PL14610: RP = 14-18psi, ht = 3.52, od = 2.69, vol = 19.99. listed for RX8

Since 2012, Purolator Pure One came out with a synthetic filter material for a couple of years. It had better filtering and was called the PLS14459.
Then they dropped that line and was replaced with their newer line of filters with different numbers. The new line of synthetic filters is called BOSS.
The replacement is now PBL14461.
Then Royal Purple came out with their great filter but it is more expensive than the Purolator.

Here are some specs.
Oil Filter M20-1.5
PL14459 Pure One-------- ht = 2.95, od = 3.15, vol = 22.98
PBL14461 BOSS syn------ ht = 3.36, od = 2.97, vol = 23.28
Royal Purple CHC-10-2808 ht = 3.62, od = 3.15, vol = 28.21 more expensive

Purolator replacement numbers for the FD are PL14612/PB14612 (BOSS)...which is what I use. I assume the numbers you're using are for a larger filter body. On my car the oil/filter changes are probably only 1500-2000 miles apart (and 3 to 4 months) and I'm not convinced a larger filter needed.

I THINK I know what your point is. And the answer is no. And unless you can show me some data, DOES it matter? I run the filter whose number corresponds to the car I'm changing oil in and don't sweat bullets over minutia given the mileage between changes...which likely isn't all that unusual among us. Unless it's being broken in, things like fuel dilution are probably as much at play in engine wear than slightly more filter media. So I don't think it makes a difference. But this is America.
