Gauges

Okay, I'm replacing my center mount speaker with a 3-pod gauge cluster. I'm not certian what would be the most benificial gauges to get though.

I obviously want a boost gauge to monitor my boost pattern and help me down the road when I invest in a PowerFC/Comm. combo.

My friend mentioned an EGT gauge would be useful and possibly a fuel pressure gauge. I dont know if these are the best options to go with or not for my car.

I am going to be using DEFI D-Gauge black face gauges,

Those prices seem pretty good to me although I could be off.

Thanks,
~Kris

you should look into buying it at the rx7store they have better prices than that...as far as what kind of gauges put the boost on the steering wheel neck or pilar mount then put a water temp, oil pressure, and the egt on the center mount...

I'm going to install a new boost gauge, water temp. gauge and fuel pressure. These seem to be the peramiters I would like to monitor. If anything other than that, oil pressure.

JaNusSolSumnus 05-04-04 07:34 PM

But the car already had a temp and oil pressure gauge... I really want to avoid having duplicate gauges.

I'm not going to be going crazy fast performance in this car ever. My goal is 320rwhp, manual-swap and really nice looks. (While looking stockish so nothing gawdy, no worries) Dont know if that effects your opinions of what I need or not. As far as details of what may happen to the car in its future;

-Stock motor, if it blows I'll get a Pineapple streetport
-Stock turbos, if they ever go probably JDM stocks or twin-non seq. (Small/Med size)
-Upgraded radiator (Probably Koyo or Fluidyne)
-Upgraded FMIC (Possibly Blitz/Greddy)
-Upgraded ECU/Controller (PowerFC/Commander)

Thats the gist of my mods I plan if I go 'extreme'... nothing crazy, just what the thing should of left the factory with. lol Also to note, I chose these particular gauges because they perfectly match the rest of the car, which is something I'm trying to maintain... a stock but not stock look.

Thanks,
~Kris

I just fear the accuracy and failure of the stock gauges when it comes to vital measurements. I'm also in Arizona where it tends to be brutal and you need to monitor your engines activity more often. Thats my beliefs anyway, take it as it it.

The problem of relying on the stock gauges is that they tend to have problems. The oil press. rarely works correctly and the water temp. only reads too high after it is too late.
I'm planning something similar in the near future. I plan to use Cyberdyne gauges because I like the way they look when their off. I want to have a water temp., oil press., and EGT. I'll have the boost gauge on the steering column.
BTW I have a white face Defi boost gauge; it looks great.

is it possible to mount the d-gauges (water temp and oil pressure) where the stock ones go in the dash? just a curiosity... personally, i plan on mounting my FC commander screen on my steering column and using it as my "gauges". i think it keeps the interior looking nice and clean.

Is there a way that you can replace the mechanism in the gauge so as to make it more accurate while maintaining the stock look?

I would of thought in a car that MSRP'd for 40k origanally and having an engine prone to high temps Mazda wouldn't of skimped on the preventative monitoring tools. Ohwell...

You can try the linearizing mod for the temp gauge. A quick search in the 3rd Generation section will turn up a few links.

If you are getting a power fc w/commander you dont need to get a water temp gauge. Boost also can be monitored with the commander or your boost controller. Fuel pressure is #1 recommendation from me. EGT is #2. Oil Pressure #3 and Oil Temp #4.

No, the D gauges are too big for the stock mounts.

egt is worthless because of how hot the rotary runs, that added to the position of the sensor makes it hard to get an accurate comparable reading..

I would get an intake temp gauge before egt, IMO

boost #1 Water temp #2 Fuel pressure #3 (or a wideband if you can afford one)

When comparison shopping for Defi D gauges, (at the time) I found EDO Performance to have the lowest prices, however, if you decide to order from them, call and make sure that they are actually in stock! Took 2 months for them to get 'em in and ship to me!

MrRx 05-04-04 09:42 PM

I wouldent go thru EDO, EDo is just 2 guy selling out of a room, there is no actually buliding, that is where i bought my Bf boost gauge. they came to me rather than having me come to there "office"

good prices.

I agree with you about the wideband - I will be running WB02 all the time as soon as my package from techedge comes in. As far a boost and water temp the power fc does both. I sold my boost guage because I prefered to look at my controller's graph after the boost rather than at the gauge when I was boosting. I almost never watch my water temp guage as my car never is above 89C and besides I keep water temp, intake temp, knock, and injector duty on my commander all of the time. I do not have an EGT yet but as I understand it it helps with tuning ignition timing and as far as placement of sensor I am sure that one can be worked out. And the last one I said - oil temp - isnt required but I have a gauge pod left and I am curious how well my single stock cooler is doing.
