Gauge setup ideas

Time to buy gauge(s) for my single turbo conversion and my main goal is to have the simplest and cleanest setup possible while still keeping all the necessary gauges.

What I don't want is the jet fighter look with lots of gauges and lights with different colours. I can add one more colour other than the oem amber/red but that's it.

I am thinking of buying a Maxi Gauge ( MaxiDISPLAY II ) which can display 8 parameters, has warning functions and I think can be datalogged. And if I buy this I will install it in the DIN above the cd player.

The problem is I have an Apexi AVC-R and an Apexi Power FC (and commander) and I don't know if I will still need their displays after buying a maxi display gauge. I'd prefer to keep both the AVC-R and the PFC commander in the glove box if possible. So my question is, do AVC-R and PFC "display" anything important that a Maxi Display can't?

Maxi display can display 8 parameters and so far I am thinking, EGT, Boost, Oil Temp, Oil Pres and AFR. Which other 3 things should I look out for; revs, shiftlight, voltage, fuel pressure, intake air temp, water temp???

To give you guys an idea here is a video of Maxi Gauge:

Personally I think this is much less archaic. Though functionality may be on point, I think the Maxi looks like a Gameboy.

DM-100 OBD II - PLX Devices Inc - USA

Completely customizable and you would really only need 1 gauge, though 2 would allow more flexibility. From there, positioning could go in any of the normal places.... A-pillar, steering bezel, dash speaker, or even stereo surround.

I agree with you, it looks archaic but I'm trying to come up with a cost effective and simple solution. Otherwise I think a HKS Camp 2 would look pretty good :)

PLX also looks pretty good, I'll consider it, thanks for the link.

One question though, do we have OBD II ports in 93-95 RX7s? I don't think we do. Don't know whether I can use the gauge in the link or not......

Does anybody know if I buy a PLX multi gauge or a maxi gauge, will I still need AVC-R or PFC commander displays for anything?

Analogue Boost gauge where it's easy to see. Then why not just get one of the new EL Commanders for the PFC? Plenty of info, less clutter, amber color, easy install and less expensive. And you don't have to pull it out of the glove box for a sensor check.

I have two plx DM 100 gauges (you can't use the OBDII product the have). you could really get away with having just one though as it can show 4 parameters at once.

I have boost, AFR, water temp, oil temp, oil pressure, and fuel pressure. Each temp and pressure module can do two sources. So you only need to buy 4 sensor modules to get these 6 outputs.

You don't need a gauge for EGT (especially if you are only looking post turbo). You need two preturbo sensors (one for each rotor) during tuning. You want to log it each run so you can make adjustments to the tune, so it should be incorporated into your ECU. Once you are done with tuning, there is no need to actively monitor EGT's, especially if you can watch the AFR on a gauge.

The DM100 gauge and 4 sensor modules will be a little pricey, but well worth it.

A separate voltage gauge isn't needed. You can by special battery terminals that display the voltage digitally if you ever need to trouble shoot something. It's not something that you need to actively monitor.

Because I am looking for an all in one solution. I still need at least an EGT, AFR, boost and oil temp, not counting oil pres, fuel pres etc...

Wow, good advice, thank you.

I am a little lost with PLX pricing but I think gauges are $100 and modules are also $100, I came up with something like $600 for 3 gauges and 2 or 3 modules and related sensors (if I haven't miscalculated), which is pretty decent considering the cost of DEFI gauges.

How can I incorporate dual EGTs to my ECU/PFC?

Supernaut 07-26-12 08:59 AM

You only need 1 gauge per 4 sensors.

ALPSTA 07-26-12 05:31 PM

Yes but 1 or 2 looks uneven in the din, so I'll have to buy 3 :)

I'll be going with the SPA dual gauges and replacing the stock gauges in the cluster. Doesn't get too much cleaner.

Is there anything like the PLX DM 100 that can interface with a Power FC? Or with a Datalogit?
Any other way seems unnecessarily complicated
