gauge mounting ideas
I am installing a boost gauge and a water temp gauge soon. I would like to mount them in the glovebox. Do any of you have any good looking ways of doing so, maybe some pics.
thanks |
by the way, i should buy the electrical water temp, and the vacumm type boost correct?

I just hope that someone will be watching the road while you are looking in your glove box to check your boost guage.
The only thing close to this that I have seen is to mount the guages in the pasanger side dash above the glove box. |
I'm sure you coudl make a simple false panel out of wood that would fit into the glove box. Like what you would do for a speaker box.
However, Guages in this location should be thngs that you only glance at now and then. Gauges that you need to keep a constant eye on (like the boost gauge) should be in your line of sight. |
don't use wood, use ABS plastic, you can get a 12x12 sheet for $5 from most audio stores
|
I just helped a friend mount his water temp & boost gauge under the single unit stereo. I turned out really nice. Looks like it belongs there.
|
id suggest either getting a instrument pannel mount via the border mickey mouse ears, the amemiya steering pod or an a pillar mount such as the autometer type for those 2 gauges because they are so important and youll be looking at them damn near all the time.
BTW: Wood in a fd is never a good thing hahaha :D |
what is the border mickey mouse ears? I wouldn't mind mounting them both in a dual pod pillar mount, but I was thinking of doing something a little different that wouldn't ruin the a-pillar with holes.
also, what is the amemiya steering pod like? will it hold two gauges? |
Check out this link, it's got the steering column pod and the center speaker pod. Both very nice, look good, and where you can see them at quick glance.

Since you're looking for options I'll throw this one into the mix. I know you were looking for a way to mount 2 gauges but just in case you really wanted 3 :)

that looks pretty sweet, but I bet it's a bitch to run the wires to it.
|
so the electrical water temp gauge and the vacumm boost gauge are the correct ones to purchase right?

I would like to put the boost gauge on the center of cluster, the others two on A piller. Its easy to read than put it in glove box.
It you want to put it under the stereo, just buy the HKS mounting bracket. Its perfect fit. |
I know that those two are the best two to install, but I am referring to the type of water temp gauge and the type of boost gauge. I know the vaccum type is the right boost gauge, but there are two types of temp gauges as well. I believe the electrical one is the easiest to install.

Go electric for the water temp. You don't want coolant hoses inside your dash.......... really bad if you get a leak.

The electric gauge have a big problem once the power shortage. All the electric stuff will cause shortage too. I experienced my friend's car got the electric shortage and damage all the electric gauge dead. So, think about the mechanical gauge.

'Mechanical' gauges are not safe from those that are electrical-knowledge challenged either - how do you think they light up?:) |
Originally posted by dclin Uh, I think this is more of a problem of clueless people trying to do electrical work on their cars (like not using grommets for wires passing thru sheetmetal, twisting wire ends together and wrapping it in electrical tape instead of soldering, and other absolutely stupid 'I have no clue what I'm doing but wanna start a fire under my dash' tricks).
