Gauge Mod!!
 

So, I have done the gauge mod where you initially rub off the amber color background and replace the lights with LED's. I pm'd numerous ppl for this mod, and nobody wanted to do it for me. So I did it myself.


And good news!!

If you use bulbs WLED-WHP6(Cool white 8500k) 194 x 4
and White 74 WHP, you will come out with the even light that we are looking for without adding extra lights. Now, they won't be as bright, but, only a touch dimmer than the bulbs everyone else is using. Initially I tried a 2 LED 194 bulb which was a bit brighter, but it was only bright in the local areas. These new bulbs offer 360 degree coverage.

And....even though I did pull the whole needle out with some of the gauges they still seem to be working. What I did was move it over to full, and pencil marked it.

Did I get lucky? Maybe. But the bottom line is these lights look good, and look like little circuit boards, but work.

Only problem is that some of the smaller 74 bulbs that I replaced in the dummy light setup were so bright that you could see the indicator even when it was not lit up.

I know, crappy pics but I've been drinkin' and it is late. Tough to beat draught beer @ $8/pitcher. But it's uniform all around.

P.S. If you look closely you can see how the "Cruise" light is visable because the LED is too bright. I have had to replace some dummy lights and eventually this "Cruise" light back to stock.

This is with no extra lights other than stock.

Now does anyone have any Defi's to sell me that'll match?

looks great. i only shaved off the orange coating behind mine. the LEDs really give the gauges a nice updated look. nice job.

i wish the pics were clear as well... maybe try putting a stool or stack some books on your seat if you don't have a tripod? =P

I don't like it. I think the factory gauges (orange) looks better.

Some updated pics. I just can't get the picture to stay clear.

I cleared all the way through the redline, on purpose. It may be noticed in the pic, but in person you can't tell. It does look nice and bright, which can be dimmed.
Initially I thought it wasn't bright enough, until I shut the lights off in the garage.

try taking the picture and not moving the camera right after the shot

Try holding the camera on the seat or steering column. Hard to tell the detail from the pic. Neat, I think.

I didn't move the camera, I usually take incredible pics, and the camera was dead still each time. It glares from the interior lights, causes streaks.


What can't you tell? It is even all over, you can see that much in the picture. Take my word for it.

i was under the assumption that you'd just use several of these in the stock backlight plugs, replacing the stock bulbs:

we need more details! and non blurry pics! i'm more interested in whats behind the gauge faces really...

Hold the camera farther back, and zoom in. Or use the manual focus on your camera. There's got to be a focus button or feature, or something. Hell, even my camera phone has a focus knob.

It's not focus. It's that he is taking the pics in the dark, so that we can see the lighting of the gauges. When you take pics in low light, the shutter speed slows way down, so the shutter is open longer, and even the most minute shaking of the hands will blurr the pic. The best thing to do is put the camera on something stable and set the timer to take the pics, do not manually push the button.

lot's of cameras have a built in still shot. try holding down the button halfway before taking the pic...

No Str8down is right. Use the timer and set the camera down. By simply pushing the button is why there is blur.

Better pics with the timer on. The shutter speed advice was right. Also, I personally like the look of the 94 tach much better than the 93.


The yellowish light from the side was just key light on.




By the way, does anyone know the bulb # for the overhead map lights?

I don't understand the question? You use them in place of the stock bulbs, they fit.

ok maybe i have no idea what the stock lights look like...

you're saying the WLED-WHP6 fits in place of the stock lights? it looks like a whole little circuit board with six bulbs on it, like it's too big... i thought the stock cluster had multiple spots where ONE bulb plugs in
