i've never seen the link but what kinda info are you looking for? I've taken mine out a couple times, maybe i could help.

It is so simple a guy like you really doesn't need instructions.

I bought a new 95 or 96 tank from Mazdacomp last year for my 93. Installation was very straightforward.

Run the car very low on gas. You don't want to deal with 3-5 gal of gas in a bucket/tank.

Disconnect the fuel pump electrical and hoses.

Open gas door and remove gas cap and then remove the two small bolts that hold the black flange around the filler neck.

There is a ground strap that attaches somewhere near/on the filler neck, I'm not sure where it is.

Get under the car and remove the two bolts that hold the two straps, these support the tank. Now the tank will be free. Drop that puppy down.

I hope I didn't forget anything...

On the swap, I bought a NEW tank and it didn't have the thick rubber padding that insulates the tank from rubbing the body. I removed all the rubber and foam padding from the existing tank and used rubber cement to attach it to the new tank.

R+R filler neck and the fuel pump assy to the new tank, don't forget the little flapper that prevents gas from flowing back up the filler neck.

Installation is the reverse of removal;) (I always wanted to say that).

I'd say the entire job took me about 1hr. The hardest part was dealing with that freakin' ground strap, I didn't see it until the tank was hanging by it so I had to struggle to remove it.

Do us all a favor and measure the amount of gas you put in the car to get it started and the amount you put in it at the gas station.

I put about 1gal of gas in my tank and drove the car to a gas station about 1mi away. IIRC the manual states the tank holds 21gal or so. I don't think my car took more than 15-16gal.

BOOOYAAA JEFF!!!!
exactly what i needed to hear :-)

damian 05-19-04 11:32 PM

by the way, did you change the tank cuz of the old tank fuel starve issues?

Rhode_Dog 05-19-04 11:33 PM

excuse my ignorance but why would you want the newer model gas tank? holds more fuel? less fuel slosh?

damian 05-19-04 11:36 PM

supposedly better design (baffel or pickup or whateer) so you get less fuel starve on hard lefts at the track

Sort of. I had fuel starvation issues if I auto-x with less than 5/8 tank. That is pretty pathetic. Then about 1yr later I started hearing the baffles clunking around in the tank, a couple of the larger sheetmetal baffles broke so I pulled the trigger and bought the new tank.

I can now run the car down to about 1/4 tank with no problems at the auto-x. I think that is acceptable.

damian 05-19-04 11:55 PM

yes, again, just what i want to hear... im in teh same boat, fuel starve way before 1/2 tank and hearing noise back there

...ordering tank from mazdaspeed now :-)

PVerdieck 05-20-04 09:55 AM

Was the tank modded in 95, or do 94s have the improved tank?

rockshox 05-20-04 09:57 AM

i believe the tanks were changed in 94 95 and 96

saxyman990 05-20-04 10:06 AM

Interesting! This is good to hear. I'm having the same problem, but I had no idea they changed the design. Thanks for the info!

They were changed in 94, Mazda added the plastic "loops" to hold the new baffle but didn't add the baffle! It is basically just a cover over the plastic fuel well thingy.

I *think* that the 96+ tank is the one to have but I also remember someone saying the 95+ tank has the same p/n...

2MCHPWR 07-01-05 08:28 AM

where do i get this tank now?

damian 07-05-05 12:26 PM

you looking for a 95 tank? just order one, that is what I did.

Nameless 07-05-05 04:14 PM

Can anyone verify that the 95 tank is the same as the 96+? Dlrship was not helping me out with a 96+ part.

Did you order it from Mazda Motorsports? How much do they run?

dubulup 07-05-05 07:51 PM

I believe the 95 with 96 build dates have the new tank??? read somewhere on forum, so don't hold that to me.

well of course we'd have to order it, we wouldn't steal it, would we? :-P where could i order one without gettin raped at a mazda dealership?

4CN Air 12-04-05 04:59 PM

p/n? Also how close is it to the metal under the spare tire? I'm dropping mine to cut out the spare tire hump and weld in a flat piece of sheetmetal to help mount my battery (eventually external fuel pumps and fuel resevoir possibly too).

Also if I fill my car and hit turns at any speed the fuel just flows out of the filler hose, I've gotta check this out, oh yeah and figure out something to do with EVAP since it's not going to the engine bay anymore.

Everything turns into a major project.

I used this thread to help with the removal of the gas tank, but there were no pictures of the new baffels. i didn't see much of a difference between the two, but maybe some of you experts can see somethins I don't. The firs set is the new gas tank.

This is the old gas tank. Sorry for the bad pictures, by this timemy hands were freezing and I had gloves on.

I'm not sure this mod was worth it. And if your car was sitting for a long time, like mine, it also doesn't pay to get a new gas tank. Just take the old gas out if you are paranoid and put new gas in.

It was a waste of $525 for a new gas tank.

The plate that goes over the plastic tank that the fuel pump assembly goes into is the only difference I can see.

here you cans see that the plastic box doesn't have the cover.

All those other pictures are just braces for the structure of the tank itself.
