Gas guage reads when car is off?

Maybe a stupid question, but my gas gauge reads the correct level even when the car is off im just wondering if this is normal as im trying to trouble shoot my tach that works when it wants to and ruling out bad grounds etc first.

Thanks

Gas gauge shows the same reading, car on or off.

Yep. The only time it should be different is turning the key after a change in fuel level.

Great thanks, guess i have the dreaded broken solder joints or something... my tach has been working hte past 4 car rides, but sometimes it will read 1000 rpms too high, other times it does a little dance for a few thousand rpms.

When i turn my key to ignition on position when it is messed up it will immediatly jump to 1200 rpms or so if i sit and watch it it will fluctuate anywhere from 800-2000 slowly moving, then sit around 1200 or so and continue moving lol.

Anyone got an answer other than bad tach unit?

Mine will jump around sometimes, but mostly it just sits at 0. So that's on my list of things to get fixed. The never-seems-to-end list.

LOL damn i thought i was the only one with one of those, i cross off 3, and add on 5 more...

yea, it would just be nice to have a working tach lol but it sounds like its going to take me sitting down for a day and being patient

Does your jump around when you turn the key to ign on, or only when the cars running... mine sits at 0 until i turn to ign on.. then most of the time it gets jumpy which is when i know its not working. If it sits still until i turn the car on it usually reads correctly.. atleast for a little bit.

It'll do it on both. But after I get going it mostly just stays at 0.
