gas gauge problems
My gas gauge used to work until the rear end of my fd slid and hit a pile of dirt on a turn. Then it was stuck at 1/4 tank. Now it reads empty and sometimes jumps up to what the real gas reading should be. The sending unit and floater for the gas gauge has been looked at and appear fine. Does anyone have any idea what else it could be? Thanks

The baffle inside the tank has been known to come loose at times. It then flops around as the fuel sloshes and the float gets stuck. I have personally seen it happen to two cars; both were raced.
Pull the fuel pump/sending unit out again and reach into the tank towards the right and feel for the baffle. If the spot welds have broken you'll feel it loose in there and you can literally yank it out. |
Thanks

there is also a single wire that has a nut that grounds it too the top plate on the gas tank. If that wire is not making a good ground...you will get a zero reading on the gage...beyond E zero. If you are getting a "super" zero reading...that might be your problem.
if forgot to reattach that wire once...and zero fuel readings. john |
I accidentally shorted out the gas gauge wires when screwing around with the fuel pump today, is there a fuse for it, or does the sender just go bad?

does anyone know the size/threads of the nut that holds down that ground wire?

you're far better off to run a new ground directly from the pump to a stud in the rear hatch...my pump voltage went from 10.5 to 11.7
