Garden hose air pipe to cat!
 

So I had my car on a lift for the first time I bought it 4 months ago. The car had to be smogged before my bank would give me a loan, so the previous owner had to smog it before I could buy it. The car passed, but I don't know if he had a friend hook himup or not. First of all while I was under the car, I noticed the air hose to the cat was missing. I don't know if the car can pass with out that hose connected. I looked and saw a hose tucked up behind something, so I pulled it out, and it was clearly the hose that was once connected to the cat, as the open end was all burned up. Not suprising since it was just small diameter garden hose! Anyways, I saw that there were exhaust leaks on both the DP to cat flange, and cat- cat back flange. I figure I will get some new gaskets, and fix the air hose while I am down there this weekend, but what kind of hose should I use for the air pipe to the cat?

you can post a wtb ad for the stock one in the for sale section. i sold mine to a guy a few months ago for really cheap. a lot of ppl just have them laying around taking up space as there are many of us running without an air pump. good luck.

You could always run the factory piece if the ends have not been cut off.

Or you could just not run it at all and worry about it in two years when you have to take it back in for a smog.

If the stock cat is still on the car, you most definitely want to hook the hose back up, otherwise the cat will clog. As they said, used or new replacement piece is not expensive or hard to find.

is there any definate evidence that the cat will melt without air injection?


the air injection only functions to INCREASE the temperature in the rear half of the cat.

Nobody said anything about melting. What was mentioned was 'clogging'. The idea is that if the additional air from the airpump is not there to assist, the additional deposits will eventually clog the cat.

I've haven't seen evidence to prove it right or wrong. FWIW, I ran the Bonez Hi-Flo cat for about 2 years without an airpump. When I pulled it off, it was still in great shape.

People seem to have mixed results with hi-flow cats but I've seen numerous tales of people ruining their main cat by not running the air pump to it. I guess no one knows for sure but no sense in ruining a good cat when the cost is little to avoid it.

i've ran the stock cat without and airpump and a magnaflow highflow cat without the airpipe. The stocker fell apart within a year, and after 6 months i found the front half of the magnaflow cat gone.

I wish someone would have "piped" up with all these 'spare' air pump pipes the half-dozen times I have posted a WTB in the 'For Sale' section! I am STILL looking for one to use on my Petitt high-flow cat if I ever get around to putting it on, as I don't want to destroy my stock one.
