Fuel Smell from Brake booster?
 

Ok I heard that there is a one-way check valve in the brake booster. Problem is, I have no idea what/where the brake booster is or this check-valve. I'm getting a gas smell under WOT and have read searches on this. I have norrowed it down to the metal check-valve for the boost or the check-valve in the brake booster. Can anyone explain to me what this is and how I can look for it? Also, what does it do? Thanks again, -Joe

Joe, check the aluminum check valve in the purge control system. Mahjik, just replaced his to fix his fuel smell problem. The part # is NF01-13-890 double check this to make sure. Mahjik said it costed around $19.00. Post back when you find out if this was the culprit, it's usefull for future searches.

yeah, that was my first idea, I just thought I could check the brake booster while I'm doing the other one...although from the sounds of it the one way check valve sounds like it's been the culprit for a few people...

The brake booster problem seems to be more of a 2nd gen problem than a 3rd gen. I've never seen anyone with a fuel odor problem and had it be related to the brake booster yet on the FD.

Check your car after driving it for a little bit. Let it idle and open the hood. Sniff around the passenger side of the UIM. See if you can smell any gas.

If you can smell gas, then you more then likely have a leak related to the injectors or pulsation damper. If you can smell the odor at idle but not in the engine bay, then check the charcol canister.

If you can't smell any gas odor at all while the car is idling, only when flooring it, examine the check valves and hose connections for the purge control system.

I have had this Fuel smell problem under boost with my FD, and everyone had me checking fuel pulsation dampeners, metal checkvalves, and charcoal canisters.

The brake booster valve is actually embedded in the "L" shaped hose that comes off the hardline along the firewall and down to the booster.

I did not realize there was a valve in there, and replaced the hose with silicon thinking i was doing some preventative maintainence.

I put the old one back on and its fine. Beware however: if you haven't removed this line by accident, its likely NOT your problem. Thats why no one (even KD) thought to tell me to check it. I don't think the valve fails very often. The fix has since been verified by KD however.

It's not a "hood" related problem, it's only under full boost. Thanks ptrhahn for that extra info...

If theres no smell under the hood, i'd definately check the booster line... This was killing me because i even jumpered the fuel pump and pinched the return line and couldn't reproduce the smell under the hood anywhere. Without the valve, the flow can reverse and pump the fumes into the interior, and only under WOT or at least under significant boost. That could be your prob.
