fuel smell after driving
 

We still have a definite fuel smell when the car is parked in the garage after any drive.

I did the "dye" in the fuel tank, then drove it 100 miles -- checked with a black light and NO signs under the hood of leakage???????

The car has gotten progressively louder, could an exhaust leak give off the gas smell?

Also, I'm convinced that I have a leaky injector because of the backfiring and when you turn her off, you get a definite "Poof". Plus, the last rebuild showed a carbon buildup that shouldn't have been there given the grade of gas we use.

So, any thoughts on what to do? Again, blacklight showed Nothing!

If the odor is strongest next to the fuel door, I'd consider changing the charcoal filter.

You may also want to check the gasket for the fuel pump hanger. If that's not sealing properly it's not holding pressure in the tank, thus producing the odor.

Smell seems to be coming from the front. Actually I keep thinking it's even coming in through the a/c vents. That's why I used the dye, thinking it would be in the engine bay but nothing showed up. The car seems to have gotten even louder lately, what about an exhaust leak -- would that put out more fuel smells?

Yeah, an exhaust leak can make for fuel smell.

I have experienced a similar problem, whereas I'd get a gas smell--but would only notice it after I drove the car for awhile or briskly. Turns out one of the [lower] injector grommets was leaking when under boost and causing the gas smell without any visible or traceable gas leak. This was the result of pressurized intake mixture being blown back out of the intake port past the primary injector due to the faulty seal.

The gas smell produced was unusual and distinct in that it had that lawnmower/used garden equipment gas smell (for lack of a better description).
