Fuel Injector Cleaners, Techron?
 

I know I've searched this site, and the concensus is that Chevron Progard sucks and BG 44k, redline, Chevron Techron are good stuff.

I recently made a trip to the local Costco and they had

Chervon Progard With Techron. Now did Progard always have "Techron" in it, or was it 'crap' without "Techron". IIRC it was around $9 for 4 bottles, dont remember how was in each bottle.

So anyone familiar with this cleaner?

Each bottle has 16oz that'll treat 16 gallons of fuel. I buy it all the time(from Costco) for the Outback and Scienna. I'd like to know too if it'll work well in my FD.

I ran some Chevron Techron through a FD that smoked on startup sometimes from flooding and now it doesn't anymore. I also used some Magic Mystery Oil from time to time since. I've heard Techron will make the engine run hotter so it's probably not a good idea to put it in if you are going to be running the car hard like track events. It has to be kind of harsh to do anything. Other cheap fuel injector cleaners don't seem to do much. Putting Tauine in would probably do about the same thing and is a good octane booster as well.

You mean Toluene, I assume?

Yes, I was too lazy to look up the spelling ;). It's a very good "cleaner" and octane booster.

FYI - I understand that Toluene is also very hard on neoprene and most other elastomers; not to mention humans if they don't where the right protective gear since it is absorbed right through your skin.

We use Toluene at work to clean out our paint systems and to thin our paint. We also clean miscellaneous stuff with it. It's a really great degreaser. We don't use any "special" precautions but we try not to get it on the skin or in the eyes. I have gotten it on the skin and it's not that bad. It is pretty harsh stuff though and will eat some kinds of plastics and rubbers. I wouldn't drink the Techron either ;). I would recommend running something less harsh like the MMO every other tank full to keep the injectors clean. If the buildups already bad then something more aggressive has to be done. The stuff they run through the injectors when they are sent off to be cleaned is likely harsh as well.

Its not Chevron Techron, but Chevron Progard WITH Techron (r)

Actually, we use two different slightly alkaline water based cleaning solutions, it takes longer to clean but isn't hazardous to the injector's internal seals or people either. We prefer to let the ultrasonic cleaning action do most of the work.

Most injectors have their coils exposed to the fuel, some solvents will break down the insulation of the winding and it can them to short out to each other.
The Rochester injectors used in GM cars from 87-92 are notorious for this.

I've used the Techron stuff... I've never tested flow or taken the injectors out afterwards, but it's always SEEMed to help.

Same here. It's the only cleaner I use and it seems to do the job. I use before an oil change because I have heard it dilutes your oil.

Any input on whether the stuff you pour into your tank actually does anything?

I suspect not, but if someone that knows better than I could shed some light on the subject, I'm all ears. :)

So is the Progard with Techron any good, or should we stick to just the Techron concentrate?

BG44K is good stuff, we use it at the dealership in our major K services, the techron stuff the Lincoln guys use in a bulletin for something related to emissions I am sure, but dont really get into what they are doing.

Sea Foam. Works well for me.

Hey Matt - I'm pretty sure that Toluene is a suspected carcinogen.... We use it at work also and take a lot of precautions with it. I wouldn't use it without proper ventilation and I surely wouldn't get it on my skin because it is absorbed quickly into your blood stream.
