Fuel gauge reading 1/2 when tank full.
 

What could be wrong to cause my fuel gauge to read half when its completely full?

The level of the float is incorrect. I have the exact problem and am still trrying to get it correct.

I either get it to read 1/2 when full or 1/2 when empty. It is a delicate adjustment.

I think Damian had this problem as well and figured out a remedy. Try searching for a post from him or PM him

When i get the angle of the dangle correct i will share it with everyone that has this problem.

Mine was caused by the experts at XS engineering. After the fuel pump upgrade.

The tank baffle is known to break its spot welds inside the tank and then get tangled in the float. This makes the fuel level do all sorts of weird things.

Remove the fuel pump from the tank and reach inside the tank towards the middle. Grasp the baffle and see if it's still solidly attached.

well mine worked fine untill i pulled my dash apart and it stayed fine untill i plugged all the wires back into the cluster and started it up and the fuel gauge just dropped all the way down to E, it was at 1/2 before that. So I went to the gas station filled it up and the gauge went up to 1/2. I have driven it like this for a few weeks to see if it would correct it self and it is still not reading properly.

Mine fuel gauge shows less fuel that I've got, but it doesn't fluxuate. When the tank is full it reads just a hair over 3/4.

Is there any way to correct it if its in the wiring.
I thought I saw a post where someone was using resistors to correct the fuel level. If I just fill up the tank is there a way I can adjust the gauge to read full?

Maybe by pulling the needle off. You didn't do that before did you?

If you do this you must make sure that it is put back on in the proper range. Such as a full tank of gas, so the gauge will go into the full position. then you place the needle on to get it to point to the F.

However i think there is another issue if you didn't remove the needle to do gauge faces or something.

DamonB... That is a great place for me to go look at. I had always had a itch in the back of my head that the baffle was somehow playing a roll in the problem. I am heading out tonight to drop the tank and drain out all the old varnish that is in there after a 2 year down time.

What have you seen as a remedy for the problem? Replacement of the fuel tank, or take it to a tank repair shop and have it repaired.

Either of those I guess. You don't have to drop the tank to check the baffle. Just remove the fuel pump and reach in there with your arm (nearly to your elbow). An autox friend emailed me pics long ago when the internal baffle on his R1 broke loose. It was literally rattling around inside the tank. He yanked it out through the fuel pump cover.

i purposely recalibrated my gauge to show less gas then i actually have, just so i dont run it too low.
