Fuel Gauge not working? Lets get some ideas.

Ok, problem started a few months ago. My fuel gauge in my stock cluster would work perfect above half a tank of gas. Below half a tank, intermittantly would drop and then go back to where the level of gas is. This mostly happens during hard turning and would usually fix itself after a while.

I switched out the fuel pump thinking it could be the level resistor. Same problem still occurred. So I switched back to the stock fuel pump and now it doesnt register at all on the gauge. Totally stopped working.

I borrowed a local friends fuel pump and subbed that in. 3 fuel pumps tested and all 3 still show no registry on the fuel gauge.

Ive got some ideas as to where the problem could be and I will check once the car is down for upgrades. Could they be?:

Loose connector, that finally lost all connection.
Gauge broken?
Some fuse/wiring thats bad?

-I figure if the gauge would not work then other parts of the cluster wouldnt work as well maybe?
-I'm not sure if there is a fuse or anything that directly controls that gauge at all that could be bad?
-I'm ruling out the fuel pump since ive tried 3 pumps and they work in my friends car just fine.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Back up a sec - when you say swapped out the fuel pump, do you mean JUST the fuel pump or the whole in-tank assembly? The float arm in the gas tank is what drives the gauge.

It's a VERY simple circuit - just one wire carries the signal from the tank to the gauge. If you've swapped out the float and the gauge still doesn't work right, I'd next suspect the gauge. Wiring diagram C1-A in the shop manual has the circuit.

I changed the sending unit on mine and it works flawlessly now. Sending unit was only 120 from mazda.

I swapped out 3 full fuel pump assemblies. Is the sending unit the same thing as the circuit on the fuel pump assembly or something else?

Its on the pump assembly. If you have changed that out then you have a short in the wiring or your gauge is malfunctioning.
