Front Relay Box Relocation Question
 

Where are people relocating the front relay box when it's in the way (like when installing a v-mount intercooler)? I mean the long one in the front of the engine bay.

You can pull it appart and pull it though the gap between the bumper and part above it, then put it back together and zip tie it to the bumper. Worked good for me out of the way. If you want a pic let me know and i will post one.

I just mounted mine underneath using a custom made solution - plastic zip tie ;)
It has been like that for over a year now.

Is there enough space for it with the bumper reinforcement?

i dont think it would fit with the reinforcement probly have to take it out

Sheesh. You don't need to place it all the way under the bumper reinforcement. There are places to zip tie it to right under where it is so you can still access it when you remove the IC.

Yeah well i didnt want to put it there cuz its right in the way of the air flow. I dont need to mess with it much anyway.

Jolting this thread back to life for a request of a picture of what you are describing. I am diagnosing some fuel pump wiring issues, and I will be needing to access the speed FP relay, and I want to get easier access for future accessibility. I hate the prospect of taking the front bumper cover off just to get to the dang relay box.

if you unscrew it from the chassis and let it hang, you can access it through the mouth of the bumper. it takes a little fidangling but you can get to it. you unscrew it and flip it upside down.

Whatever you do, you don't want to mount those relays upside down - wherever you relocate them to, they should retain the same orientation as OEM (i.e., cover side up). Why? Because these relay sockets are not environmentally sealed, and the design relies on gravity to let any water/moisture drain off them to prevent corrosion of the electrical contacts.

I had a project car that had the relays hanging in the engine bay for a year. All the relays were rusted out inside.

The Greddy V-mount wants to mount them horizontally and seal up the bottom with caulk, I think this COULD work but I'd rather put in some more work and find a way to mount them upright.

The thing about the Greddy V Mount is that (with twins) there isn't anywhere else to mount this box. Short of splicing extensions, and drastically relocating, there aren't really any options.

This weekend, I'm planning to take the nose off of the front of my car and jump the fuel pump relay to see how my voltage looks. Since I dont have A/C or a radio, I may de-pin just the FP relay contacts and make extensions for those only and route to somewhere accessible.

Care to share the procedure for this relocate?
Seems like you need to de-loom, cut some wires that go to the passenger side, and maybe make a bracket to put it on the driver's. I wasn't too keen on this because I would have to resplice the radiator fan wires but wasn't sure if that was required.

It's really as you said - unwrap the harness, extend or shorten wires as necessary, re-wrap and mount the box.

This is a job that needs a lot of time and care to do right. Lots of key systems run through that box.

We put a few rivnuts on the core support and mount the relay box behind the bumper. Do not flip the box upside down. After years of trying various attempts to seal it, water always gets inside over time and fries the relays.

I don't remember how I got it through, but I got it to where I could bolt it to the core support just down from the hood latch, and mounted upright like originally. I drilled holes and installed nutserts for it. I don't remember having to do anything crazy to get this through the core support though.

It's kinda difficult to get to now, but I've rarely needed to get into it in all the years I've owned the car, and I'm still able to take the lid off and can sometimes get a relay out if I'm lucky. It's accessible with the bumper off though.

Can anyone shed some light on what I'm missing, or what I'm doing wrong with taking the relay box apart? Mine was mounted using Greddy's ver.1 instructions (upsidedown) and I'm trying to mount it using the ver.2 instructions. From what I've read, I need to take the box apart to slide it back through, but I can't get the box apart. Are there clips or anything holding it together on the inside? Or is it just the few clips on the outside?
