Which front mount intercooler do you prefer
I have been looking and cannot really find any comparisons on front mounts and was curious what people are running and what they are happy with, also how much modification was needed to install it.
I am aiming for 400-450 rwhp when I go single this winter and just want opinions from people running different front mounts thanks. -Chance |
Blitz for simplicity of install and great performance. Unfortunately they are pretty hard to find used and are pretty pricey new.

Greddy 3-row is a good intercooler, and the Blitz is good as well but it has been discontinued. Alot of peope on here have different opinions on what is considered the best option. Im personally staying away from a FMIC to keep more airflow to the Rad. A V-mount is also a good option. Im personally getting a Pettit SMIC. But thats just me, and I run twins for now.
|
great Blitz is what I was leaning towards in the first place.
I am tired of my greddy smic, done everything and every time I am in traffic or not keeping a steady speed temps go up and I have grown tired of it. I also really dont want to deal with a v-mount I believe I can have great water temps with a front mount if it is properly ducted. Thanks for the fast responses, keep'em coming! |
Blitz all the way. Installs without removing the front bumper, sits further back from the front bumper to allow air into the engine bay. I've had zero cooling problems with it installed, and it looks pimp to boot :D
|
any pictures rich?
|
I have been using the 2Row greddy unit for 2 years now with NO water temp problems even with high summer temps. As long as you duct it properly then you will be just fine as far as water temps are concerned. I really like the Blitz unit but like it was mentioned above they are hard to come up with and I got a good deal on my greddy.

Great I am pretty much sold on the blitz.....now just to find one :D, thanks for the advice!

Dont forget about the apexi gt, it got patented fin design which allow maximum air flow to the rad.
|
I say a small stock mount intercooler with water injection...less lag, better cooling.

This album is from the initial install: https://www.rx7club.com/album.php?albumid=501 https://www.rx7club.com/picture.php?...pictureid=3406 What it looks like now: https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...3&d=1249561189 I highly recommend a mesh grill as my oil cooler fins and blitz fmic fins are still in great shape with minimal bends. Also, the Apex'i is a good fmic to look into as well. |

blitz fmic has short piping, so lag isn't much changed from a smic. I certainly wouldnt want to move to a smaller core size, and i ran a smic for many years so know they heat soak like crazy. I'm running water inj, so am getting the best of all worlds in my opinion......cool water temps, cool AITs, minimal boost lag. |
Is moving the radiator necessary and how difficult is this task?

yes, and it's pretty easy. that link i provided shows some pics of the install, you need to take an airsaw to the stock sway bar mounts to mount the rad differently. you may need some new rad hoses, i went single at the same time and got the chrome universal style hoses, autozone etc carries them.

Sorry to bring thread back.. I have a brand new Blitz FMIC still in un-opened box (bought the very last one Blitz had it in USA)... I'm debating about selling it or using it (I also have brand New Apexi FMIC).
Question to Rich, Can I still use stock mounted battery or do I need to relocate? |
I'm not Rich, but you might have to do what I did with my Apexi front mount - run a smaller battery and fiddle with the battery tray a bit. I am running a Miata battery on a modified tray, this is what Apexi intended the installer to do.
Batteries go under the hood, not in the car :). I've had great luck with the Miata battery - it's small and light, but still a "real" battery so it can stand up to sitting for a while, cranking on it, etc. Dale |
Dale can you post some pics of that? Also, you going to goto DGRR(X) next year??
|
blitz is def the way to go! I noticed no differences in coolant temps but my air temps drop like crazy when hitting boost.
|
Phil, my battery has been in the back hatch since like 2001.
Dale, I also hope to meet you at DGRR coming up in April :) |
i say hks. awesome i/c! good luck finding one though. too expensive new.

I also like that the blitz fmic uses the factory elbow.
