If you haven't gotten a ticket for it yet, I would keep going without the front plate until you do.

Haha...I've recieved two front plate tickets and one of them was exactly like that. Atleast I didn't have to get it checked off...just pay.

The other one I was actually grateful to get...the cop was going to bust me for flying through an intersection, but my excuse was so good that he let me off with only a front plate ticket. Lol...I will never have a front plate on my FD unless it's to get it checked off at the police station.

In CA it's required to have one, but they don't pull you over for it. They add it on when they are already writing a ticket for something else. I just run without it, and figure I'll just pay the fine when I get a ticket because it doesn't affect your record here. In 7 years I have only gotten two tickets for it, and the fine ain't too hefty.

But what I was saying is that in some states, you just might not be able to find a tag holder, and thus they just drill into your front bumper, which is horrible.

When my cousin bought his 2003 Camaro SS the dealer drilled holes in the center section in his bumper and he was freakin' furious. He told them that he didn't want the car anymore,etc...the dealers excuse was that they HAD to do it to any car that went off their lot because it was law. I think they ended up giving him a new center section with no holes...damn dealers!

In ohio you must have a FLP but i either have mine in the window or i stick it up on my sun ray blocker (dont know the name of it). When a cop rolls by you flip the sun vissor down, no cops here seem to mind that idea.

scotty305 06-30-04 12:57 PM

My RX-7 also has holes drilled in the bumper, :( So I have my front plate on there to cover them up. It detracts from the beauty of the front of the car, but I feel better when I realize that most people are going to spend more time looking at the back end of the car anyways. :D

I prefer no front plate, this gives the cops an excuse to not give you a ticket for speeding, once they've already pulled you over. In CA that's a fix-it ticket, much better than a moving violation.

So I would be alright if I got one of the ones that flip back? They couldn't stop me on the highway if they couldn't see it?

DCrosby 06-30-04 05:42 PM

They sure could, but they'd look once they pulled you over, and the smart ones would be pissed, and the dumb ones would be puzzled.....

Check you state's statute on this. In my state, the plate must be mounted a minimum of 12 inches from the ground and it must NOT swing. I suspect that the wording may vary, but your state has similar requirements.

It does suck to have that front plate on though...

scotty305 06-30-04 10:56 PM

California state law also says the license plate mount must not swivel or pivot. Like DCrosby said, the smart cops would be pissed.

Biggest factor in not getting a ticket is not driving or acting like an asshole. Do that and you'll usually be OK.

Yea I went the same route. I told Ray that Mazda could keep the bracket. I posted on the forum and found one for $15 bucks.:)

skylinesRbetter 07-01-04 02:54 AM

here in texas, for us that have intercoolers, or just feel like it,we are alowed to mount our front plates in the window, as long as it is clearly exposed

Ohnigiri 07-01-04 08:48 AM

I only place mine on the dash when I'm parked. It goes under the seats when I drive. Traffic cams are a bitch out here!

Enthu 07-01-04 10:03 AM

I got stopped for the first time for it in 4 years. I was not even moving. I was stopped at a stop sign waiting to make a turn, and a cop drove by me staring at my car, the came after me after I made my turn.

I just told him I never got a front plate holder. Being that the car had no place for it, I didn;t want to drill holes.

He got a little angry maybe, but I was only told to get oen on there when I can. No fix-it or fine. So I'll continue without it and hope not to see the same cop for the next month or 2.

Tell the state they can swing my 12 inch up theres!:p: Stupid laws.. hate um.. Matter of fact if the state wants my car to be the way they want it, they can pay my payments:D.

If you don't want to pay $80 for license brackets which I don't blame you. Go to home depot, or whatever your hardware store is called and buy a couple of these L shaped brackets. Mount one part under the bumper reinforcement, and the other hole to the license plate. Depending on how you put the L it will allow you to have the license plate up like the picture mahjik showed you, or facing down blocking the air passage.http://www.dansworkshop.com/00-index...et%20clamp.jpg

anyone have a link to the japanese spring one?

RX7INSAC 07-14-04 03:34 AM

I just got pulled over last week and got sited for no front plate and modifed exhaust (PFS), but luckly he said nothing about my front mount or all the other mods that can be seen though my hood. It was a $351 fine without corrections. I was affraid to go get a officer to write of the correction and then tell me to "pop my hood".

Forget the jap springs and all the other expensive stuff.Go to a junkyard and get some thick rubber, cut two pieces from it,bolt the one side of the plate to the rubber piece and the other side of the rubber below the nose of the car where the original plate holder bolts. With 0.2$ you'll have a flip back plate....and if a cop asks you why, tell him its designed from the factory to keep the flow for the radiator(and its also true)...

ptrhahn 07-14-04 08:23 AM

I've had 3 RX7's since 1994. I live in Fairfax County, VA and not one of the three has EVER had a front plate... i've recieved exactly one ticket for it in Richmond, stopped at a checkpoint roadblock (where they are looking for such things). One other time a cop stopped me and asked about it, and i flat-out told him, "look, i know its suppoed to be there, but i hate it because its ugly... so give me a ticket if you must". He didn't!

I think you'll get alot less hassling about such things if you keep the rest of your car mature looking. No pimp tints, stickers, wings, underglows, etc. I see an awful lot of "adult" cars like Porsches and Ferraris with no plates either and they don't get any shit. Cops generally don't hassle people they percieve as mature adult taxpayer types.

In any case, it isn't a moving violation or insurance-affecting, so why do you care? I'll gladly occasionally pay $80 for the "priveledge" of leaving my car plateless.

Section8 07-14-04 08:44 AM

I bought my car from a guy in WV, and it had no front plate bracket. I've been driving it for 2 months in VA and I did get pulled 2 weeks ago for it. Course, I had been lazy and still hadn't done the VA inspection or put my county sticker on either, so he really had me by the balls.

I gave him the 'no bracket speech' pulled out my front plate that I keep in the passenger bin, and told him I was having a hard time spending $80 on the bracket. I guess he bought it because he only gave me a ticket for the inspection sticker, and let me off on the county decal and front plate.

wiblergt 07-14-04 08:59 AM

here is an idea...

my buddy bought two L brackets used to support a shelf from LOWES and used them

cost him $3.50 and it looks great!

cewrx7r1 07-14-04 09:06 AM

In Singapore they also require two plates.
Because a lot of cars are not too well design for plates, they have a different solution.

Some plates are vinyl and stuck on like decals. Do not affect air flow and can't cut yourself washing or waxing the car. Also have different sizes of both types.

Figures...I luck out in that category BIGTIME lol.

When I got pulled over 2 weeks ago, how my FD looks had EVERYTHING to do w/ it. That, and I wasn't to smart...I kinda made eye contact w/ the officer (I tend to do that).

He came over and was acting like a total prick on a super power ego...cutting me off when I spoke, etc...asking me if I was stupid LOL...until a few min into it, when he realized I wasn't a teenage punk. That's when he was like hmm.. nice car...LOL. A few more min and $80 later, I was on my way...

areXseven 07-14-04 10:59 AM

Just carry/store the front plate in your car. If you're ever stopped for not having it installed out front, just tell the office that someone recently, deliberatley broke off the front bracket. Pull out the plate and show it to him. He might let you go with a warning only??
