Front Cover O-Ring difference
Anyone know what the differnce between these two front cover O-rings are?
Both are from atkins, one came with the front gasket the other I purchased separately. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...97c61b770b.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...1248717b4d.jpg |
Are they the same size? And is that the metal front cover gasket?
|
That's for the paper front cover gasket. If you have time, order a metal front cover gasket. You don't need an o-ring with it, just make sure both surfaces are clean (no little gasket bits), throw the metal gasket on, and install the front cover.
Paper gasket you want a SUPER thin smear of grey RTV on then use the oring and teflon spacer. I would use the whiter of the two, that's the Mazda part, the other may be one they are sourcing from somewhere else. It's the upper/left-hand one in both of your pics. Finally, when the front cover is on, you use a razor blade to trim the little bit of gasket that sticks out the bottom. I had a number of front cover issues on my FC back when I built my first motor. This is something you want DEAD RIGHT, pulling a front cover in the car is the biggest pain in the ass possible. Dale |
metal gasket with or without sealant?
|
No sealant on metal gasket. Both surfaces clean, install and torque front cover to spec.

you might want a dab of sealant at the corners where it meets the oil pan

Also should I maybe look into ordering from ray crowe? |
Atkins Rotary has the metal gasket. I think it's a non-US item so Mazda USA doesn't have it.
It's like $40 last I saw. Dale |
The RX8 Gaskets are metal and work with the FC front cover, Not sure about FDs. That's what I ordered from atkins. Also I smeared a layer of permetex anaerobic gasket maker on both the front cover and the front Iron.

If anyone is having a hard time finding it I noticed its sometimes referenced as the cosmos 20b metal front cover. the Cosmo came with a paper gasket until 12/1995, when they switched to this metal one, and the FD switched to this same part at the same time. |
