Front brake issues
 

this problem is on the front brake rotors. I put new pads on and compressed the pistons but when you put the wheel on and bolt it down the wheels will not move at all. Is there something wrong with the rotors. Rears work fine but the fronts bind on the rotor when the wheel is tightened down. I'd appreciate any input on it. Everything appears to be right and the pads are brand new Hawk HPS's

You should be able to move the rotor with your hand once your caliper is on. Did you removed the cap off the master cylinder when you pushed the pistons in? If you didn't the fluid being pushed back might compress the air in the cylinder reserve cause it to push out again on the caliper (as if you were on the brakes lightly). I've had this happen before but i couldn't get the caliper back on the rotor even. How tight is your wheel bearing nut? Did you for some reason touch that? How hard was it to get the caliper on the rotor?

caliper went right over the rotor but I don't have the screws holding the rotor on. It spins freely till you tighen the wheel down. If ihad the screws for the rotor it probably would move when tightened down. The pistons are still all the way in. Appears to have pleanty of clearance.

Sounds like the rotor is getting forced into the inner pad when the wheel is torqued down. Possibly an alignment issue with the caliper or pad, but maybe not. I'd start by removing the wheel and installing the nuts to get the rotor into running position. This should allow you to see the problem. Also might want to measure thicknesses of rotors & pads.

alright the pads are brand new but that shouldn't make a difference

Caliper pistons are compressed and the rotor won't turn after install?

You didn't replace the rotors?

The rotor turns fine until you put the wheel on?

Is there clearance between the wheel and caliper?

Bolt the calipers up, and then bleed the brakes.

Just out of curiosity, you don't have three shims on each of the front pads do you? I was at a guys house one time when he was changing the brake pads and watched as he took two shims off the old pads and put both of them on top of the shim that was on the new pads. he did this on all the pads on the front. I had just bought my FD so I didn't know to tell him any better either and this was his first time changing the pads on his FD. Needless to say, with that many shims on, caliper pistons in or out, that wheel ain't spinning nowhere. We knew then something was bad wrong. Took the shims out except for the ones needed and SPIN THE WHEEL!! :pat:

Just changed my pads the other day getting ready for DGRR and didn't make the same mistake. You live and you learn.

I figured it out and it was something dumb that just didn't see. I had the washer on the top bolt and the bottom bolt got close to the rotor. Wheel rotor would spin fine without the wheel on but when the wheel was tightened down it binded the rotor on that bolt coming out. Guess things like this happen when you buy a cay with parts in boxs. All is well now and it works fine now. Thanks for the input.
