Flywheel resurface
 

Do i have to resurface the flywheel? IM doing a motor rebuild and just looking around at other stuff i have to do like get my side housings lapped, i was wondering if it was crutial to get my flywheel resurfaced...there doesnt seem to be any scratches or scores in it, just wondering what you guys think.

what's the mileage on your car? i have about 40k on mine and i was told by a few "reputable" people in and around the RX-7 community that i most likely won't need to worry about it when i change my clutch out (hopefully will be able to have this done soon). from your description of the it, i personally wouldn't worry about it.... but pictures for the more experienced guys would be a great addition to the thread :D

damn for $30 (at least that is what my local shop charges for a 2-step) I wouldn't even take the chance. just 2 cents though.

/\ i agree. just get it done. ask those reputable shops if they will r&r it for you after it is in if it turns out it warped. if you are going to not do it at least hook up a dial indicator and check the run-out on it.

Definitely check for runnout and step accuracy when they finish it. it seems that not a lot of people surface these things and are a little surprisesed when you bring one in.
The guy at the auto place actually asked me if the flywheel was for a forklift! :rlaugh:
Just make sure to tell him not to lay into it like they usually do with a chevy flywheel or something. It will make the thing oscillate wildly on the machines they use. Just tell him do it nice and easy and it will work flawlessly.

Check the step with a flat bar and dial indicator to get the actual measurement from the factory by using the unused surface on the outside face of the flywheel surface and the step to get a accurate measurement and then check back with us what you got for a number.

Ihave not gotten a SINGLE flywheel resurfaced corectly out here. It is always out and they barely if ever hit the step.

Every one i ever had done chattered like a banshee when it was back in the car. Don't chance it. If you trust their work have it done. If you don'ttrust them just replace it.

i now replace ALL flywheels I work on, either with a lightweight one where the drive surface is replaceable( RB, SR Motorsports,etc..) or a stocker from Malloy. It is not worth doing the job again. ( FWIW: I just got a FC new FW from Malloy. Cost: $238...Ray is the man!!)

damn i must be lucky to have a good shop nearby. i checked mine and it was perfect the first time. no special instructions, no fuss. thank God for a good maching shop
