flowmaster muffler in midpipe
 

right now i have a 3" midpipe with a bonez high flow cat, and i am eliminating my airpump and cat. i want to put a 3" flowmaster muffler in place of the cat. from looking under the car it looks like an offset inlet(inlet on passenger side) and a center outlet would work the best. im planning on the flowmaster 44 series which is:

Case Length (in) 13.000 in.
Overall Length (in) 19.000 in.
Thickness (in) 4.000 in.
Width (in) 9.750 in.

has anyone tried this setup before? do you guys think that a centered inlet would be better? i feel like the muffler is going to be pretty big in there and an offset inlet would be best? by the way i already have the RB catback, how do you guys think it would sound with the extra muffler?

I would HIGHLY recommend a Borla XR-1, specially living in Cali. I don't like flowmaster because they are not true straight flow.

dont you think that the flowmaster would sound deeper, and not too loud since i have the RB catback?

I have no idea how they would sound. They might sound deep on a V-8 but on a rotary they might sound completely different. I have heard RB duals with the Borla and it sounds pretty good and not loud at all.

I ran the Borla XR-1 and the Racing Beat dual tip for quite awhile (single turbo). Incredibly quiet and no 80mph drone.

+1 for the XR-1.

does anyone have any experience fitting a full size muffler in the cat's place? i have seen the XR1 in there and it fits nice, but im looking to do something different, i really want to deepen up the sound, and i think that this is my best bet.

Why not just use a magnaflow muffler? It's pretty much what everyone uses on the FD and I've never heard any complaints.

i guess my biggest question is should i go with the offest inlet or centered inlet on a muffler that is that big? from what i can see looking under the car it really looks like i should get an offset inlet(passenger side) with a centered outlet.

Well if you really want to see if it fits. Get you some cardboard and make a muck up of the muffler and see where would you need the entrance/exit to be at.

As others have said, Go borla xr1 or magnaflow. They are true straight through designs which is best for exhaust flow.
The flowmaster 44 and other chambered designs like it hurt flow/power/etc

I used a 3" magnaflow center/center and it took a little effort to line up. Might be easier with a center/offset. Since its a true straight through muffler it can be reversed also, something the chambered type cant do

rx7store uses a center/center, I personally have a center-in/offset-out

So either one should be fine for you

go with the borla or even dynomax.


or you could just leave it alone....

i think that the flowmaster would have a deeper sound than the XR1 or the magnaflow. im not that concerned with gaining the absolute most hp since i already have a plugged cat. ive just seen too many guys use the XR1, and i want to try something different.

do you guys think that those dimensions will fit nicely?

What makes you think that the Flowmaster Super 44 is going to sound deeper than Magnaflow or Borla XR-1 Sportsman?

You said three times that you are most interested in getting a deep tone, we're listening and that's why we're suggesting the Borla or some other straight-through design resonator. This section of the exhaust isn't designed to have a chambered muffler.

I see the description on the 44 series:

Ok it sounds good but it really isn't saying anything. When I scroll down to the specs on these mufflers I can only find them in anondized steel, not stainless for the size you specified. I'm not exactly how important it is to use stainless only with rotaries but maybe someone else can comment on that. But I do know the casing thickness is 16 gauge which is .060" and Racing Beat recommends .090" minimum:

I can't find the exact spec on the FD catback, but Racing Beat's other mufflers use .125" thickness stainless.

There isn't supposed to be putting a muffler in this location and the one you've chosen is massive. If it was the only muffler that might be ok, but you also have the Racing Beat muffler. It's going to be much quieter than it is now when you install this additional muffler.

I dont understand your reasoning. Basically you are slapping on a non-legal component on your car, one that can cost you big money
if the police ever find out. And yet you dont care about hp... then why risk it? stay legal.

I have a rb with a magnaflow and it has a nice a deep tone. To be honest, I could care less if every fd out there has the exact same set up. As the last time I saw a random FD on the road was in january.

The best way is to mock something up, get under the car and see if it will work.
