I got my REX a month ago :D and was wondering if it is better to be serviced by a dealer or by a professional mechanic who knows about wankels. Is it hard to find a expert?;)

Personally, I would go for a place that is not a Mazda dealer but knows about rotary engines. This is only because I have had my car in about every Mazda shot around me, and they have all done more damage than repairs to it.

Yes, it is hard to find a good shop. Just call around and talk to them. Most of them will tell you right out they don't work on rotary engines, the other ones, as them how many they have worked on, and the work they have done.

Stay as far from dealerships as you can for the most part. Maybe if it is general maintenance (ie oil change), then take it to someone who knows.

The dealer is okay for small jobs like oil change, belt and radiator hoses, brake jobs. However, these things can be easily done yourself and if you have the time, why not do the job right yourself and save some $$$.

For diagnostics and engine related problems, you should try figuring things out yourself or take it to a rotary specialist shops. This site has a list of rotary shops. I hope there is one in your area.

This forum is really helpful. For every problem that you have, there is usually tens of people who experienced the same thing that can offer good advice. Also, do a search on certain topics before you post something. This way, you'll get more info quickly.

I would have to disagree about the dealers and major work.
I used to work for Mazda (and going back) as a tech. I worked a guy who worked at gunther mazda in Fort Lauderdale. When Pettit racing started out they messed everything up! Scott had to fix all there misstakes. So not every Mazda dealer is Bad.

He's updated his profile so he's in Kansas. I can personally say that all Mazda shops in the Kansas City area (Missouri and Kansas sides) suck..

I went to the Olathe dealer and they were helpful. They know some stuff about it and wanted me to trade it in on a MP3. I said no but they were sure they could sell it in 2 days.

Anyways I live in OP so I'm close enough to Olathe. The only other dealer is Northtowne thats a little far for me.

I found a mechanic from one of my mom's friends. The friend has owned 6 1st gen RX-7's over the past 20 years. He knows alot. Thanks for your info. :D

Just becareful. 1st Gen is not 3rd Gen.

Even Mazda dealers can repair 1st and 2nd gens without any problems.

BTW, I still wouldn't take it to any Mazda dealer in the area unless it's warranty work. All Mazda deals around here can talk the talk (they sound like they know what they are doing), but hardly any of them can fix major problems with the 3rd gens.

Smaller problems, they usually do ok.
