Fitting a FC T2 tranny into an FD ?
 

I realize that an FC tranny will bolt up to an FD motor, also that the clutch would have to be for an FC (Since the FD is a pull type and the FC is a push type). But what about the length of both transmissions? would the FD driveshaft be the same spline count as the FC output shaft?

why would you want to put the FC trans, into an FD. The FD trans is probably the strongest part on our cars. lol

The T2 tranny is basically the same as the FD, but a little simpler. Single cone synchros too. KDR has done it quite a bit, I hear.

I know folks do it without much trouble, but I don't know any details. Please post if you find out.

Yes the fd shaft will work on a fc trany in a fd car.

So to put an FC tranny into an FD, the only thing I'd need to change is the slave line, clutch and pressure plate?
I'm assuming the tranny mount is different also?

You would have to change the rear housing on the trany to the fd one for the power plant bar to work.

Just to make things more complicated.....what if the FD was auto?
I'm converting an auto FD to 5spd and he wants to use the FC T2 tranny. Would I still need to get the FD 5spd rear housing?

The FC turbo gearbox and the FD gearbox are basically the same thing...I believe they are referred to (seriously) as Type R, and the FC nonturbo, miata, rx-8 boxes are Type M. Other than small gearing and synchro changes, the R boxes are all the same, and the same strength. The FC turbo boxes have the same 2nd and 5th gear synchro issues as FD's.

There's 2 ways to go about it. IF you want a direct bolt in, you could change the bellhousing and clutch fork, and the tailshaft. Then your shifter, PPF mount, slave cylinder and clutch would all mount up like stock.

OR you can do as is suggested above and make the FC trans fit the FD body, using some of the FC parts. For this you'd need an FC turbo pressure plate (the clutch discs are the same). Most likely you'd need the FC turbo starter, as I have compared them with FD starters and found them a little different. You'd have to have the FC turbo slave. The FD driveshaft would fit the FC tailshaft. I dont know how the shifter would play out, it may be a couple of inches off one way or another but not too far. You'd need to use the FC shifter stick, though.

The couple of bigger issues...I am not sure that the FD electronic speed sensor will fit the FC tailshaft, so I dont know if the speedo/odo would work or not. The biggest issue is the trans mount...there would be nowhere for the PPF to bolt to on the FC trans, as it uses a dedicated crossmember like conventional cars.

Bottom line, there's no gain to using the FC trans, and its more trouble than it could ever be worth. Just buy a jspec FD trans for 500 bucks and go on with life for another couple of years.

Heres the thing.....we are doing a 20B swap to an auto FD. We dont have an FD 5spd, so if we convert it to an FC transmission it would be alot cheaper to replace if/when the tranny breaks....and for some reason FC clutch kits are cheaper lol. who woulda thought!

IN your case you need to just go on and buy the FD 5sp stuff. Because the FC trans will not come anywhere near bolting up to the FD PPF. Unless you want to ditch the PPF and find a way to solid mount the trans and the diff to their respective chassis locations, the only other way is to use a tailshaft from an FD 5sp trans on the FC turbo trans. In which case you still have to buy the FD 5sp trans to get the tailshaft. :dunno:

After two tranys letting go at the track last race I Have any extra rear housing where the ppf mounts if your interested. Than you can use the fc trany

You can get FD trannys in the FS section cheap all the time. Just keep your eye out.
