Fire Extinguishers
OK. This subject does not get enough attention, given that we have and FPD (Fuel Pulsation Dampener) in our car that can go and start leaks.
Anyways, I finally got off my lazy ass and got one. I was wondering what to get, because I read various comments here. Get a marine extinguisher because the material is gentler on the electric wiring etc. So anyways I was at Costco and got a twin set of Home/Marine bottles. Mounting. Where to put it. My first thought was in the trunk. But then again, when you have to grab this puppy in the more direst of circumstances, you need it closer to hand. So I don't want it in the passenger footwell, because it will be an impediment for people there. So I start thinking back of there. We got the area around the bins. A sidemount in the body panel on the sides might be a possiblity, but it is a pain in the ass to to totally remove those siden panels, because of where they come in to the cargo/bin pieces etc. Then again, maybe not because possibly you can just remove the stripping and just loosen those interior pieces enought to drill and mount it. So then I thought of the cargo cover. In that small frontmost portion. Drill though it, and have it there. I could still reach back and get it. But that cover is kind of chinsy, and I don't think that a couple screws in that material are going to hold worth shit under hard cornering. So back to the point, where have people put their extinguishers? |
I keep mine in the passenger footwell close to the seat and the tunnel. Nobody ever even knows it is there.

I have one... A definate must.

Mine's too large for the bin also. I keep it on the floor behind the driver. It's pinned in pretty good if your seat is adjusted back, yet easy to get to.

I have one in my driver side bin since my battery is in my passenger side. Whatever you do dont get a apc chrome one and mount it on the passenger a-pillar.....that's so ghey! I just had my dad get me one from his fire station, its made for car fires and is nice and red! :p:

I keep mine where my bins used to be :)

I got a AEM from the Flea Market for 20.00...
Mount it on the passenger side.. |
Actually...from what I gathered, the best extinguisher you can get is a Halon unit. Expensive as hell, but it's the best out there (used for aircraft fires) and will not damage any engine bay components or electrics.
As for mounting, I think two things are very important. 1) What you use to mount it. The ones that come w/ plastic mounts...you can pretty much throw that away. You need a metal (prob. steel) mount, so you can actually secure it...and the mount won't break in the event of an accident...which brings me to #2... 2) While Johnski's is very accessible, that bin area is crappy plastic, and given the weight of a *decent* extinguisher, that thing would prob. break in a significant impact, leaving your extinguisher a "x"mph speeding missle. Not a good idea. Roll bar is perfect (again, w/ metal fasteners). If ya don't have one, I'd suggest what BLKTOPTRVL said: "I keep mine in the passenger footwell close to the seat and the tunnel." Secure, not likely to hurt ya if it broke loose in worst case scenario, there's a large area so you can fit a nice 5lb one prob. (if you think those crappy 1.5 or 2 lb extinguishers will work in a REAL fire... you're kidding yourself lol. You'd be shocked at how fast they run out) The only drawback I see is you have to be able to bend over to the passenger side to get it...but I figure if you can't do that, you prob. wouldn't be able to move to get an extinguisher from anywhere else for that matter...:( |
i have a little one in the bin. but its too small? maybe if i had two of them?
im thinking about cutting the passenger seat open like fnf and put it under/in the seat. since i want to get rear seats, i wouldnt have bins anymore. |
For dry chemical fire extinguishers, please remember to shake them once every year or so. This will keep the powder from settling inside. If the powder settles at the bottom,...the air will be at the top. And when you use the fire extinguisher,...it will fail.
Although Jonski's picture (and mounting method) got me thinking...I wonder if the prolonged exposure to heat from direct sunlight will cause a problem w/ the fire extinguisher??? In parts of LA,...things get pretty freaking toasty sitting in the sun. I know the guys w/ metal shift knobs, experience a condition known as "hot knob" around here. |
I think some of you are a little paranoid.....my thoughts are if my little 1-2 lb fire extinguisher don't get the job done, then I'm just going to wait for the fire department.....:)

But still...you're prob right. Paranoid as hell. But I drive an FD...one of the few cars that you actually NEED an extinguisher LOL. So whatever the worst case scenario is, that's wut I'm most likely to face lol. Better overprepared than not ;) |
i like that looks good

i stuck mine on the carpet behind the passenger seat. :)
it's pretty secure, and it doesn't broadcast extra horsepower to the riceboys out there. (don't want to scare them off, hehe) ;) |

I mounted mine in the trunk behind my rear seats. It's attached to the above compartment lid. Very easy to remove. If it does fly aound it won't hit me :) unless I roll the car and then I have many other things to worry about :( //Oliver |
