Fire extinguisher mount for Raceshop harness bar!

5 Attachment(s)
Well I have to thank Larry for taking time to make this bracket. I sent him a pm a long time ago asking him if he could make a custom mount for a fire extinguisher for the harness bar. I knew what kind of mount I wanted and explained to him that I wanted the ability to be able to flip the bracket so the extinguisher could be mounted on top of or below the bar.

As I stumbled to try to explain what I wanted, Larry immediately stated "I know exactly how I am going to do this!" Well OK?!!???

So I expected a LONG wait due to all of the growing requests for his rollbar. Within a couple of week I get a PM....IT'S READY!!! NO SH**! Are you kidding?? SWEET!!!!

Anyways, thanks again Larry for taking the time out to make a custom piece. I know it's simple, and might not seem like alot, but I do not have the means nor the time to do this. I really appreciate you making this piece, especially the time to make it work right.

Anyways, here is the pics of the bracket. Simple....the four holes on the vertical bracket go thru the harness bar. You have to drill the holes in. However, once you do, these are centered so you can "flip the bracket so the mount side is either above or below the bar. Thanks for the powder coating!

This is the mounting plate with quick release that I bought. I had it shipped to Larry so he could use it as a template.

Here is the quick release pin and the extinguisher with the mount.

Here is Larry's mount mated to the extinguisher mount. PERFECT FIT! Also, nice touch with the addition of the 12pt bolts.

Here is how I can mount it on top with the quick release pin.

Here is how I want it mounted most of the time. Hidden and subtle.

Here is how you can have the quick release pin pointed to the front. I should be able to pop off the divider and pull the release pin fairly quickly. For DE days or just to "bling it", I can flip the bracket and have it mounted on top.

Here I had to notch the cargo cover but no big deal. Also when the bracket is flipped "up" it does push down on the divider....but again, no big deal and not bad for making this bracket without seeing the rest of the parts!

The extinguisher is a Halon extinguisher. I can't remember where I purchased that bracket from, but it was link to by someone in the forum when there was an increase in posts with questions about Halon extinguishers.

7racer, very nice :) The link is http://www.h3r.com/ btw ;) My ONLY criticism (although constructive) is that such a small bottle prob won't do much for you, as it won't last very long. The pro shops (racecar fabricators) I know said you'd want a 5 lb bottle at MINIMUM.

True. But it was more than the little powder one that I had before. I plan to have both. There are plenty of extinguishers around during SCCA events. Hopefully, enough during DE's.

I just remember the old post by Damonb when he had a fuel leak (IIRC) and put it out with a little extinguisher. Just wanted some insurance (though only 2.5lbs worth).

Also, I was interested in the quick release mount option. I found it here:

Where did you put your 5 pounder?

is that a camera mount?

7racer 05-12-06 12:17 AM

yup camera mount from ioport on the diagonal bar. Damian had a link to it when he had his post on camera mount options.

I got it here:

Absolutely ;) Halon's def. the way to go, no question about it :)

Very good point.

Some is def. better than none. But then again, maybe I'm Mr. Overkill :D

I like :)

I haven't installed it yet. I'm actually going overboard. After I finish my engine and turbos overhaul, I'm getting Mitch Piper (former engine builder and fabricator for PFS, currently a "from the tube-chassis and up" full racecar welder and fabricator) to fab me a full cage and a Halon extinguishing system. Prob. gonna run two 5lb Halon units in place of the bins (in a nice fiberglass enclosure), secured to the roll cage. One nozzle to the engine bay, one to the interior, and one to the fuel tank (as per his suggessions). And yes, this is gonna be a serious track car ;)

that's badass! i lack a cage and a camera for that... oh well...maybe in the near future! :bigok:

poorboyracing 05-12-06 12:33 AM

I lack the cage too! :p:

I'm not sure an extinguisher mounted there is much good for the track. With a helmet on I don't think you can get to it in a hurry.

I fabricated a mount with a quick release pin that sits off the front edge of the passenger seat . I can pop my harness and get to it in a matter of seconds. Doesn't look as cool, but is more practical...

Nice workmanship on the mount, though!

ptrhahn 05-12-06 08:06 AM

Looks very cool. I'm expecting my bar any day now. My only question/concern is your ability to actually reach and remove the extinguisher if you needed it while sitting in the driver's seat... I was going to mount mine just ahead of the front seat on the floor.

7racer 05-12-06 08:41 AM

It is absolutely true about the location being difficult to get to. The extinguisher mount pictured is designed to be mounted with a bracket to the front seat. I wish there was one available for the FD.

That was my original plan. This was more practical. Also, I don't have a harcore race car like FDnewbie or Damian. I'm still very much a novice. This should be good for me for now :)
