FEED widebody hurt resale value?
What's everyone's opinion on this? I've seriously been debating throwing FEED (the authentic kit, not the shine auto stuff) wide fronts and rears on my car. Mainly to fit some steam rollers out back with some wide tires, as I'll need it (335's if possible). I really love the kit, everyone's doing it though. I also don't want to cut up these perfectly good quarter panels. I want to be able to sell the car if needed be and I don't like modding unless I know it'll get me some money back out of it, you know? Just wanted to know everyones take on this
Thanks in advance :icon_tup: Jay |
Is it the car with the 2jz swap in your sig? If so any re-sale value based on being Original/Stock/Mint is gone with the motor swap alone. I dont think adding the FEED kit will will make much of a difference at that point.

I'm sure youve seen swapped cars sell for more than mint stockers, the question you should be asking is are the swapped/heavily modded car selling for as much $ as was put into it. In nearly every case I've seen the answer is NO.

The only body kit that keeps or may help the value is a the OEM 99 kit and from what I've seen anything else will lower the value especially wide body kits. However as mentioned your car is already heavily modded and no doubt needs the body kit to match up some tires to balance the power so go for it and keep building the ultimate FD according to you and if and when you sell hopefully someone will have a similar vision and take it off your hands and you won't get beat up too bad. So I say go for it :icon_tup: |
Where did I say I wanted to get all of my money back that was put into it? I have bought and sold many of cars, I understand how selling and buying a car works.
Fritz, I thank you for your answer! I do have an OEM 99 front bumper, just thought the FEED would give it a little more room. But I can't bring myself to cut up such a timeless car! The wheels I have for it will be able to fit 285's or 295's on stock body with rolled fenders and when I really need to stick, I have a spare set of welds for it! :D |

Have you seen what super clean LSx or 2j cars go for? In cases I've seen some of those cars sell for more than what an "Original/Stock/Mint" 13b car sell for. Yes my car is 2j swapped and it may be "ruined" to some, but the body, suspension, and looks of my car will not be. :icon_tup:

personally I never think about resale whne I mod the FD , because to me I just cant imagine it going to anyone else.. I have an un natural attachment to the car .
But for most people .. if I were in the market.. You gotta get in the head of a person that wants a 2jz FD .. WHAT does a person want out of a 2jz ... What will their mindset be .. 1 drag racing , 2j are very powerfull potential so that coupled with the FD's light weight body it makes a good drag car . Will teh drag racer types want big wide body kit ???? 2 drifters the 2j makes great power while being very reliable . very good for drifting . will these drifter nuts want wide body ?? 3. daily driver . I get this every day... SWAP N LS INTO it , swap a 2j into it . I get that daily , why because I drive my car alot . I drive it every chance I get. and even most rotary fanatics will tell you that dailying an FD is a bad idea . the general half informed public sees a rotary as something that runs on flames and dragon scales So people are afraid of it . but they see 2j ... OH I can drive that every day .. what will they want ? do you think they will want a wide body ? I'm sure there are alot of other people with different mindsets that may want the 2j in the FD .. But thats your job to figure out and see how they would react to the widebody. |
Seriously?
Value is in the mind of the buyer, and everyone assesses it differently. That's why you'll see BOTH pristine original examples, and highly modified examples (like motor swapped cars) going for higher values. Fairly safe to say, if you've already cut the car up for a Supra motor, you've lost the purist buyer. The idea that you wouldn't want to now "cut up the timeless body" is a little silly. It's got a Toyota motor in it and probably a gazzilion horsepower. Might was well put on the flares. |

No one said anything about being ruined. I wont speak for the pushrod motor but I am a big fan of JZ's (1j mostly). Your car is obviously already considered the highly modified type to any potential buyers, I don't think that wide fenders will do much to change that given what you have already done.

One thing to consider with an extreme wide body kit is IMHO that's really for a barely driven show car. You're coating the car with fragile fiberglass, it will most likely scrape on any driveway and spiderweb the fiberglass, etc. I've seen real-deal widebody kits in person that were installed top-notch and you end up with something VERY fragile.

I say do whatever you want o your car. Just remember that you get what you pay for. So make sure to never cut corners and i'm sure down the road someone will like what you did (if its done right) and will buy your car. When modding the car or any car you're always losing money.

There is this special camera you can buy on Amazon called the "does it look retarded camera". You need the 15 Megapixel version to use with our car. I think the part number is DILR-15X57A. It's made by IRCool industries and you can get it for around 59.99 with Prime shipping.
Basically take the camera and hover over the car. If the "looks retarded" light blinks rapidly, you'll know you've hurt the resale value, otherwise, don't worry about it. I personally think FEED stuff is awesome so you could save yourself the 59.99 plus tax and not buy the camera but the devil really is in the details. It's possible to make anything look retarded, even the FEED stuff, given enough "ingenuity" and shortcuts. (Hey I can use twine instead of a zip tie!). Some people forget to invest in this very awesome camera, which you can use as you modify your car to make really awesome decisions! Please note, do NOT buy the competitor version called the Area Realization Energy of Retardation camera, or iAreRetarded. |
If the body kit is installed correctly and the paint work is of high quality it wont hurt, especially with the 2jz swapped in it kinda fits the build. If this was a low mileage 13B car I would say dont do it, with the swap I dont see it hurting the value, if done cleanly it may even help.

If the kit is installed properly with no gaps then to the right buyer it can increase the value.

A survey should be taken right now to see how many people looking through this thread would buy your car at the price you want to sell it. Then people should tell you how much they're willing to spend with the mods and stuff on your car, just saying it may give a general idea of how much your car may be worth if you were ever willing to sell it. Also price it with a wide body and without a wide body.

I personally like the FEED kitted RX-7's, whether authentic or Shine Auto and plan to add the widened fenders onto my FD in due time. This seems to be the most popular kit for the FD whether in the US or Japan ( not that this matters in this case ) so it shouldn't hurt resale much if at all as long as it is fitted properly. Excuse my ignorance, but as far as the rear fenders go I was unaware that cutting was involved. My impression was that the rear fenders were either riveted or molded on. This could change my plans to fit the shine kit as I planned to use rivets. Sorry to thread jack.

I guess technically you could reverse a 2JZ converted car, but I'd consider that a "cut" car. That's a pretty significant conversion.
For that matter, you could remove the flares and have the OE fenders welded in and repainted. That would probably be less work and money than reversing the motor swap. |

You have to cut the fenders to take advantage of the wider wheel well the over fender would offer. Otherwise the tire will always hit the stock fender. |
