FD Speedometer

I just bought an FD and am learning all about it.....but I am having a problem and would like to know if any of you all have had this. My Speedometer will not work til am at about 40mph and or in 3rd gear.

It is most likely your speedometer sensor. Refer to the Service Manual section C1, page C1-20. Shows how to test the sensor.
The speedometer in an FD is electronic...meaning there is no cable going to the speedo to drive it mechanically.

thats just your cars way of telling you its not meant to go slow:D

Heh, I wonder if we all learned as much as we could about these cars before we bought them if would we have bought them at all.

seriously, I wanted an FD so bad, regardless of whether I know all about them or not, I saw my opportunity and bam, got one.

Also its not like the average person does hours of research on auto's before they buy one, we only assume to because of all the research it takes to keep these cars running good.

My advise to you rza786 is to find a GOOD rotary mechanic, and make him your best friend, It took me 3 shops before I found a place I like and is knowledgeable (a good hit to a good shop is that there are several FD's parked out front). Don't take it to the Mazda dealer, and don't trust anyone that says "yeah I have worked on those before".

who needs a speedometer? ;)

actually, while I LEARNED as much as I could about the rx-7, and specifically the FD, before I bought mine a month ago, I had already paid for it when I saw it and drove it for the first time. Huge gamble. I checked all my bases, but still, huge gamble. Paid off in spades. For under 10 grand I bought a black 93 touring, stock, good compression on both rotors, outside beautiful, inside great(few problems, but thats for me to fix and perfect), turbos great, moves like a freakin bat out of hell....yeah its auto..but god, I love her.
