FD shop manuals - what's all of them?
 

OK, I'm trying to get a full set of FD shop manuals. It's trickier than it sounds :).

First off, I STRONGLY believe anyone planning on doing ANYTHING with an FD needs to go buy a REAL, PAPER shop manual. The PDF version isn't gonna cut it.

I currently own -

- the "small version" 93 shop manual. This is the all-in-one book, about 6" across/8" high/3" thick.
- The "dealer copy" 95 shop manual. Got it for a steal off Ebay brand new :). The dealer copies have a large binder with all the pages loose leaf in the binder. That manual has the main manual in the binder, the Body Electrical Troubleshooting Manual as a separate book, a separate Wiring Diagram book, and the '95 Service Highlights.

I also have a number of FC shop manuals :).

Anyhow, so we have these manuals -

- Main Repair Manual
- Body Electrical Manual - covers a lot of the electrical systems in the car in depth, shows how to troubleshoot the systems, etc.
- Wiring Diagram - has the wiring diagram :)
- Service Highlights - this is a generic Mazda book published once a year. It highlights new models, shows what systems were updated and what was updated with the systems, etc.

I ordered the '93 Service Highlights book today - I believe it has in-depth info on the FD, including how the twin turbos work, etc. Kind of a general primer for mechanics who are going to work on the car to understand things. It was $35 from Malloy, BTW.

There also seems to be a separate Body Manual. I'm not 100% sure what all is in this - I've heard VERY few references to it. It does have all the dimensions for the body (which you use with an alignment rack), I think how to disassemble some major body components, etc. It's $40 from Malloy - I'll probably end up getting it at some point.

Is that the whole shootin' match of manuals? Anyone know anything about the other manuals?

It's the 93, 94, and 95 parts diagrams. VERY well scanned in PDF's with full bookmarks. It's actually EASY to go through the parts diagrams and find things!

I owned a set of the '88 microfiche when I had my old FC. I could never find squat on those darn things....:)

i dono, ive never had a problem using the manuals at www.iluvmyrx7.com. Whenever i needed something in hand i just printed the couple of pages, that way i could mark them up and whatnot.

I'm always frustrated whenever I use the PDF manuals - I typically refer to them at work. You can't beat the speed that you can flip through a paper manual, and it's also not uncommon for me to find sections that I haven't seen and I learn a little something :).

Trust me - if you have the paper one, you'll understand how nice it is :).

Dale, THANK YOU for the link to these parts diagrams. It's a shame I got as knowledgeable as I have with using the other ones.

And you can take notes with the paper one.

Dale, you've got the collection as I know it pretty well covered. The '93 Service Highlights is good for people who would like to understand the car and its design instead of just change out parts in it. When I ordered mine from Ray he said there was no '94 or '95, only a 93 SHM - so I'm curious what you have that is labeled 95. I have the wiring diagram but I'm a mechanical engineer and single-line diagrams give me headaches. You can also purchase the vacuum hose diagram in color and poster sized, but that's $30+ for something I can print from the .JPG at work from free (ish).

I've never seen the body manual, but if it has dimensions of the body panels, or accurate pictures of them, I'd totally buy it so I can scan the pics and make some 3D CAD models. The SHM has many neat pics, but they're all perspective / isometric views :(

The '95 Service Highlights I have covers all '95 Mazdas. Doesn't have that much on the RX-7 - the main focus of it is on the revised ABS system that Mazda went to in '95 - component locations, troubleshooting, etc. I only have it because it came with the rest of the '95 shop manual.

I'm planning on taking my color graphic of the vacuum hose diagram to Kinko's and getting them to print it on 11x17 paper and laminate it. That should do the trick there :).

I'll probably get the body manual regardless, because that's how I am :). I'll definitely be posting on it.

I like mine b/c i don't have a computer in my garage and are clear.

i have the original BIBLE bought by my father from mazda in 93 for his CYM bought new in 1992 1/2 . i dont remeber what he paid for it back in the day but i know it was well over $100 and something dollars. its a huge black binder (3 ring) prolly 5 inches thick and looks to have like a 1000 pages in it! but it is nice having the mazda original when it comes down to it!

Which manual has sections T and U? It certainly isn't in the smaller FSM.

i could do with one of those, anybody selling or know were i can get one?

They're available brand-new from Mazda. They're not super pricey.

Do you have any idea what is in T and U? I know the small shop manual has the body electrical manual in the back - it's kind of weird and out of order.

Why not? The PDF version has been fine for me and many others. If you need constant reference you can just print out what you need, or if you have access to a laser printer at work or school or anything you can just print the whole damn thing.

If you buy a paper copy of the shop manual, you'll understand. The PDF's aren't of the best quality to begin with, and it's much more cumbersome to find what you're looking for.

A shop manual is $70 from Malloy Mazda - that's a STEAL for all the information that's available in it. Even has nice, high quality wiring diagrams :).

You're probably right. But I'm cheap. Oh well.

I've done both. I have the full 3-ring version, but when I did my transmission I printed out the FSM sections that apply, plus any pictorials and notes I found on the 'net. I also printed portions of the parts list. That way instead of fussing with a 10lb notebook I had a slim notebook that I could scribble all over.

The printed FSM is perfect bathroom material.

I like using the parts catalog as a sup. because it has better pictures sometimes and more detail.

Does anyone happen to have the PDF format to the manual that shows ALL the wiring diagrams for all electrical units? I remember a long time ago janussollomus posted it but I searched his past posts and can't find it?!?! So I know its out there somewhere. Anyone know?

I'm not sure - I've just primarily seen the main manual, not the wiring diagram..

I looked everywhere and I can't find manuals for a 93 FD. Where in the hell do you get the actual books? A web site from which I can order them from would be great. Thanks for the help.

i have the body manual and its not very interesting. 9999-95-049f-93 is the part number, i bet its cheap too
