The FD is SEX!

I think i'm not the only one that realizes that 90% of the posts in the 3rd gen. forum are about someone's FD breaking or something along those lines..Well,I just got my 7 back from Pettit Racing today. They had the car for about 2 weeks rebuilding and streetporting my motor, and I must say,my FD is now equivalent to sex.I also had Pettit install a set of KYB shocks for me,and I was still using the pre-cat so I had them install a 3" stainless steel downpipe.I have never been more excited with my FD,the difference is unbelievable.

Here are my current mods,I was wondering if I could get a few opinions as to the next few things that I should upgrade (i'm assuming ecu and fuel system, but any suggestions are great!)

Pettit streetported motor
3" stainless steel downpipe
Magnaflow catback
Pettit TKT intakes
Fluidyne radiator
Aluminum AST

Are you still using the stock ECU? Im suprised that Pettit didnt tell you to upgrade your ECU with that StreetPorted motor. And please tell me that you have a boost & temp gauge.

JWteknix 01-06-07 12:33 AM

and u should have already upgraded your fuel

Why's that? If he's using stock twins....theres really no need to yet. ECU would be #1. Such as a Pettit/M2 ECU. These ECU's run really rich...so no worries on leaning out.

Chadwick 01-06-07 12:38 AM

I hate to change your mood, but you are sitting on a time bomb. The reason that you read about so many blown motor RX7's is that they have done what you did. If you open up the exhaust and the intake without addressing the computer and fuel system, you are just asking for something bad to happen.

Upgrade your computer asap, even if you "think" you are still running stock boost. Then upgrade your injectors and fuel pump.

An upgraded computer should really be the first mod in my mind.

SiKoPaThX 01-06-07 01:11 AM

These claims are kind of BS. If you stay at stock boost levels, evidence shows that the stock ECU can handle the added airflow, especially considering the guy doesn't even have a midpipe yet.

I question whether he properly broke in the motor or just stood on the pedal all the way home from the shop.

rx7what 01-06-07 01:18 AM

If he is still running the main cat and a NON strait through muffler he should be fine. But I would make sure I had a boost gauge to watch for spikes on cold nights. As long as you run stock boost levels the stock fuel system is OK.

Lol,you're right,it was difficult to not want to floor it the whole way home, but I made sure to be careful and traffic was really heavy..

I do have a boost/temp guage,I am on stock ecu and stock fuel system,I realize that is potentially dangerous with an open exhaust and an intake, however I am only running 7 psi right now and haven't been spiking at all..Also I am in Florida,so I don't ever have to worry about any cold nights here..I knew I would need to upgrade my ecu and fuel system,I was just curious as to any suggestions about what I should do..As in,best ecu and fuel system for my setup?

fendamonky 01-06-07 02:22 AM

I would get the PFC (Check DaleClark's FAQ in the PowerFC section), just make sure it comes with the commander and is the correct series for your car. After that is in and knows your idle (correctly tuned is preferable) see about going with a high-flow cat, an upgraded aftermarket SMIC (I just put in a GReddy, I love it), upgrade the primary injectors to 850, and replace the stock fuel pump with a MKIV TT (supra)/Cosmo/Walbro fuel pump. That and a well tuned PFC should net you one bad ass DD..

just my $.02

Authentikdit 01-06-07 02:27 AM

Thanks a lot for the advice..I mentioned in my first post that I already did the reliability mods, but thank you for making sure!

haha oviously you havent experienced your first rebuild

p.s i do not own a rx7 anymore :)

fendamonky 01-06-07 03:37 AM

Authentikdit, Yeah, I went back shortly after my first post and noticed that you had also put in the rad and ast, so edited my post to match. Are you planning on keeping the stock twins for the long run?? Honestly I am thinking of getting a pair of the BNR Stage 3's very shortly... I can't WAIT!!

93red, so let me get it straight... You've been on the forum for less than a year, already gotten rid of your car b/c you didn't budget well enough to afford a rebuild and this makes you a reputable source of information, how?? Sorry, but compared to some of the guys who have been on here forever and can actually offer something other than jealous negativity (think Fritz, Goodfellas, DaleClark, etc.) your opinion weights in with a grain of sand. Go try to rain on somebody elses parade.

Authentikdit 01-06-07 03:55 AM

Read the post..My first rebuild..

Authentikdit 01-06-07 03:57 AM

I'll be on the stock twins until I can save up a little for something better..I'd love to go single but i'm keeping the car street as my dd so i'll probably end up doing the BNR stage 3's as well..How much power are you expecting out of them?

fendamonky 01-06-07 05:58 AM

Honestly I'm not even sure what I am pushing right now, so assessing a potential gain would be silly for me.. If/when I get them in and installed I will probably end up taking it to a dyno (the BNRs will be the final mod for a while...) when I do that I will def post up with the numbers. There is a shop in Norfolk that charges $75 for 3 good runs, not sure if it's a strap down or not.. may just go twice for a before and after comparison. At this point it really all depends on time for me.. if I can make it happen before I move to Europe, than I will.. if I can't *shrugs*

No he isnt. He still has the main cat, and thats all that matters. I've been told time and time again that the stock ECU can handle a mildly street ported motor.

And whoever said about upgrading his primary injectors to 850s...get real! He's running less boost than the car came from the factory with! And in any case, enlarged primaries are prone to breaking and Fubaring your motor anyway.

I've been looking into fuelling upgrades a LOT recently as im about to get my car tuned, and ive come to the conclusion that you never need to upgrade the stock fuelling system on the stock twins at a sensible boost level (i.e less than 14psi)

Dude don't worry about your car, your spec is fine - just keep that cat in there and enjoy it! and drive slow for 1000 miles :o)

I think he meant that getting on the throttle is expressly prohibited until the engine is broken in. You should call Pettit and be sure you understand their break-in recommendations. I also read your first post and found this bit to be very strange.

When you get that boost leak fixed, be VERY careful. Because 7psi is abnormally low, and when it gets fixed it will go WAY up.

The FD is SEX.....

Go single turbo... Try sex on the end of a ICBM

Mahjik 01-06-07 08:44 AM

Authentikdit,

Is the car still an automatic? If so, your upgrade path is limited.

agreed

pick up a used Pettit ECU for $300...cheap insurance and they work great with those limited mods, I ran one for years

Well,Cam from Pettit took me for a test drive in my car and told me to just take it easy for the first few hundred miles..On the test drive he pushed the shit out of it..

He also told me that he set me to run at 7-9 psi while i'm still breaking in the motor so that I don't have any problems..Although I hate to base everything off of "he said this" and "he said that",this is what I am going by...

And Mahjik, yes it is still automatic..That might change some day,it might not..It depends on how things go over the next little while..But am I really that limited to mods just because it's not a standard transmission?I understand it will never be as fun or even as fast as a manual, but I don't see why I can't still get a little power out of it...

You can get some power out of the car, however, you are limited as to how much the automatic tranny can deal with. You also have trials ahead when it comes to ECU's as well. IMO, keep it at 10 PSI and enjoy the car.

xurotaryrocket 01-06-07 12:57 PM

the stock fuel system is perfectly adequate up to 13-14 psi while keeping the stock cat in and stock twins.

The M2 stage 3 ECU runs hella rich and is designed for 13 psi with stock cat. Brian (M2) expressly said to me that the stage 3 ECU needs no fuel system upgrades and can even be run with the OEM SMIC.

The key here is to keep the stock fuel system running under optimum conditions. Keep the fuel filter clean, run fuel inj. cleaner regularly, keep the plugs fresh, etc etc etc
