Fd revival project- Start Up
 

I did all the preparations to start my fd 5spd touring that had been sitting.
I found out it has the "click click start issue" gonna buy the pettit starter booster

When i fired it up it and ran for a good 10 sec burning all excess gas.
now it only starts revs to 2k then dies.
Im thinking replacing fuel pump(had similar situation with a different car)
Timing? Coils?
Anyone have any other ideas or point me in the direction of the right thread

The big question is: How long has it been sitting?

If it has been a few years, you should send the injectors off to be cleaned, change the fuel filter, inspect all the hoses, flush the cooling system, change the oil and filter, and drain the fuel tank.

If you have skipped any of the above items, do them before you proceed further.

Just a hypothetical: Say you didn't have the injectors serviced, getting it running, get on the road and do a 3rd gear pull and one of the injectors sticks closed.... BOOM the goes the engine. Modern fuel does terrible things when it sits, don't give it a chance to ruin your ride.

I think its been close to 8 years
guy i bought it from stopped using it not too long after it got a rebuild.
Only thing on the list would be the injector thing.
It hadnt crossed my mind aside from getting a bottle of injector cleaner but then again that needs the car to be running

Banzai Racing has a starter booster now that's really nice, weathertight seals. I would take a look at that as well.

Have you put fresh gas in the tank? Drained the old gas?

May also be worth looking at the fuel pump and changing the fuel filter if you haven't done so. Possible the fuel pump is corroded or the intake for the pump is all clogged up.

If you have a stock ECU check for codes, may also be other issues.

This could be why the car has sat, they may have replaced the motor then weren't able to figure out why it wouldn't stay running or something.

After sitting in gas for years is why my first thought is fuel pump

I havent checked for codes but i will get to that

The rebuild happened at a shop. And since he lived on top of a mountain i assume the rebuild was done and the car worked perfectly. Could be wrong though

To know for sure if it's the fuel pump you can test fuel pressure. T a fuel pressure gauge into the feed line, if it drops below about 30psi or so you've got a problem. Could also be the wiring to the pump or something else in the car that's telling the pump to shut down, like a bad signal from the crank angle sensors.

It would be easiest to have the pressure guage by the pump, or should i have it closer to the engine where i gotta move things around?

The service manual says to do it under the hood. If you pull the throttle body elbow you'll have plenty of room.

You can start and run the car with no elbow, it will run fine. Just not a good idea to drive around since you have no air filter like that.

It should read the required fuel pressure with the key in the on position right?

Or am i gonna have to have someone crank it while i check?

With the key on you have to jumper the fuel pump test connector to run the fuel pump. The fuel pump will prime quickly when you first turn on the key but you probably want to run it to see fuel pressure.

but what is this? Is it important? Should i replace it?

Looks like the fuel pump speed circuit resistor.

should i be looking to get another one and fixing the wiring or bypass it as ive read up.
to me replacing and fixing seems better since im still trying to get the car to start.

I would get a good used one, they should be a dime a dozen. That's definitely the root of the fuel pump not running like it should. That controls the voltage to the fuel pump, it gets 9v at idle and cruise and 12v at full throttle. If that's not wired in or bad you'll have fuel pump problems for sure.

Is the wiring damaged on the resistor or the connection harness? It is hard to tell. For sure it is super grungy and the dirt or whatever is between the cooling fins should be cleaned for the short term. Long term, consider getting a clean used part. But you will have to repair the wiring where it is damaged in any case. Is that rodent damage? if it is, probably there is more like it elsewhere and you might want to check the other harnesses before moving forward.

Ill go with a better used one.
Yea unfortunately its the harness.
From what ive seen so far i want to say, and i really hope that there isnt any harness damage aside from that.
however i will be doing a lot more checking into it as i go and clean out the car and wait for some parts to arrive

UPDATE- I check the fuel pressure and it reads above 40psi
i checked it through the diagnostic box jumper
i could hear it, it was constant

where to look next?(aside from the fp resistor) or wait till i have that sorted out?

Get that fuel pump resistor done first then go from there.
