FD Finished 12th out of 41 at this years UTCC

Check out Grassroots Motorsports November issue for the UTCC coverage.

My FD finished 12th with a 2.028 time ahead of some decent hardware and way behind some crazy fa$$$$$t cars.

Here are some videos from the event:

Lapping vid with tunes that includes my 2.02 lap

1st session so they just lined us up as we entered the pit with no direction and I was ahead of some ridiculously fast cars. Later in the vid a dude runs across the track in front me and if you really try hard you might see the mustang that flipped over the wall just to the left of the t1 brake zone out in the distant distance as I'm coming down the front straight. Driver was fine and went on to race/drive during the weekend with NASA but the car was totaled.

This is just the short version of the 2.02 lap and that's a badass m1 car with a good driver in the seat (nasa e30 multi champion)

What type and size of tires are you running?

Awesome as usual Fritz :)

Congrats Fritz!

Got a list of the final standings with lap times? Would be interesting to see how much faster you'd need to be to get into the top 10?

Just searched on GOOGLE and answered my own question...

Also, you were the third fastest in your session. NICE!! Two seconds faster and you'd be in the top 10. C'mon single turbo (450 RWHP, wider tires and bigger brakes):)

tt7hvn 09-20-14 07:19 PM

^ 2 seconds is a long way.....

Watched the F1 qualifying session today and the top 4 were separated by 1/4 of a second. Granted a completely different class of car and world class drivers but relevant to validate my point.

Doesn't running wider tires with more HP put you in a different class anyways?

Fritz Flynn 09-20-14 07:29 PM

THANKS GUYS!!!!!

The FD is still alive and kicking :egrin:

I slacked on my tires

I tried to find some fresh c71s but couldn't find them so used some c51s with some heat cycles (only 4 and I typically get about 12 cycles so they were decent but not FRESH hehe) that were made in 2010. Got a great price on them so bought 8 earlier in the year because of the born on date.

I'm currently running 275 40 17 on 9.5 inch wide wheels but someone mentioned I should be on at least 10 inch wide wheels and I agree but $$$ bills are something I hate to burn so I generally keep things pretty low budget.

HOWEVER......I just bought a APR GTC 500 wing :egrin: Hope to have that put on later this year and test it but if not it will definitely be on before next years events.

I also bought Rich's (goodfellas) OS giken trans with the nice track oriented gearing and I added a lower JDM 5th gear which I think will really help me out at Summit Point and the 5th will be nice at VIR.

With some aero, some fresh c71s and a little luck I think I can squeeze out a 2 flat some great weather and may even break the 2 min barrier.

Sat following the UTCC I ran a 2.024 with NASA in TT2 and the tires were obviously less than perfect.

Yep I need to stick with the 275 tire size but have some room on power. Probably making approx 350 and can go up to about 379

The aero in TT2 is wide open and that's not something I've taken advantage of at all :(

Fritz Flynn 09-20-14 07:36 PM

What's a bit ironic is the little blurb about my car in the mag that says the aero is brilliant or something like that and that comment completely cracked me up :)

You should see what the 10 cars ahead of me look like not to mention the 10 behind me.

dgeesaman 09-20-14 08:39 PM

OK, I'm glad I'm not the only one chuckling about the aero comment. I mean yes you have a front end and rear spoiler to add to the effects but that's not exactly "aero" compared to the tube frame / ground effects cars running sub-2.

Looks like a great time, and the fact that it's your "home" track is only a bonus.

Orbitalmovment 09-21-14 04:29 AM

What suspension setup are you running?

Congrats on the times! Glad to see the FD keeping up with some of these monsters that have of +10-15 years of advancements.

Considering the only tracks I've been to are VIR and SPR it's a major bonus for sure

The APR wing should really help and is a legit piece of hardware so I'll likely have to change the front end some as well but currently the car oversteers pretty bad up the esses and through t17 so it should really help both of those spots.

Nice runs!....The way that GTR passes after the corner damm!

What turbo are you running? at what boost?

Link to specs of your car.

Don't have a link but I have a 10 year old thread in the race tech section called "fritz's track videos"

Yep the GTR is a BEAST before you mod it and that particular GTR had some HEAVY DUTY mods with good support. He was running low boost though because of a turbo issue and only managed a 1.58 flat :crzyeye: I expect that car to be a top 10 car again next year if it shows up and possibly top 5 if it has full power.

I had a t04r journal oil cooled with a 1.15 AR but during the weekend the HKS tubular manifold cracked so when I got back home I dropped the car off at PFS for repairs.

I had a BIG BB turbo laying around (don't know what it is LOL) with a BIG ASS 4 inch back side so it's going to be a laggy bitch BUT it's oil and water cooled and should be barely working at 10 or 11psi. My fingers are crossed that it won't be too laggy. Switching back to a HKS cast exhaust manifold (they last about twice as long).

A smart man would go with a t04e BB and run e85. One day I might wise up

t-von 09-21-14 10:46 AM

Fritz so what kinda of power would you need to get you in the range to beat that Viper? I know that larger turbos on a 13b, just makes it too laggy and not very responsive. We all know that power under the curve is what's important when it comes to power. You think you could benefit from a 20b's power curve provided that the engine was properly located within the chassis?

Sensible and FD in the same sentence lol. ;)

I think with a bigger single and about 450 wheel you would be a happy camper, forget the lag its overrated.

Everyone always says that with enough money anything can go fast and to a point that's true but the avg joe even with unlimited funds would have a really hard time building an FD that's capable of running a 1.45 lap. The aero, the torque, the power, the tires, the brakes, the driveline, the $$$$$$/all the carbon LOL etc... all combine to make one crazy fast car. BUT the combination of making all that sh#t work/R&D is where you really spend the money.

This is some serious bench race talk here but I think I could run a 1.55 lap with lots of aero, lots of tire 335 all the way around and about 450 RWHP which truly could be done with about 75k invested.

Shaving 10 more seconds would be astronaut type engineering and most every day guys just won't be able to manage that.

The laggier t04r is already slowing me down verses the t04e I used to have so when it comes to road racing you need manageable power or POWER at the slightest touch of the gas peddle and that's called torque or power under the curve.

LuvingMy93FD 09-22-14 11:38 PM

Have you thought about running any of the BW EFR series turbos?

Nakd n Fearless 09-22-14 11:59 PM

So awesome, nice lines Fritz. You are living the dream with an FD. The ol' RX7 is such a cool car, to still be running with modern exotics is so much fun to watch.

Yep they appear to be super nice with terrific #s for road racing BUT from what I know the internal wastegate isn't big enough to run low boost. Obviously you could add another wastegate etc.... but that defeats the whole purpose.

Thanks man!

I feel super privileged and lucky to have experienced this car in so many different forms on track over the last 14 years. At this point I've ridden in just about every sort of track car imaginable and still to me the FD is GOD on wheels :egrin:
