I think Tim trials will be big as well to be honest .. maybe auto-x will get more popular because of it haha

why are we talking about investing in gold like its something new? Ask the conquistadors, that secret was out of the bag a long long time ago ;P

I still think the 240 and gsx are going to become collectors. You can get them cheap right now cause they have been ragged on by many people and are in horrible condition. The next step for these cars is the scrap yard. The few ones that are kept in the garage and restored will be worth alot. They will be the needle in the haystack. I am not comapring these cars performance wise. Only value 20 years down the road. The 300zx is so low in value right now cause nissan sold a ton of them and no one can afford to pay a shop to keep them running and backyard mechanics try to avoid them. I sold both of my 300's within the last year cause of the headache engine bay.

OK lets just make this a collectible thread which serves the same purpose. BTW I searched for some 300ZXs and turbos are still selling for a decent amount of money. I truly believe the reason American Muscle cars are so popular today is because of the nostalgia surrounding them and in 30 years there will be strong sentiments for imports for the same reason. The FD is legend now to those who know the car and IMO more so than just about any other import I can think of so it truly does have a decent shot at becoming THE collectible mass produced car. Or the other side of the coin is it has a disaster of an engine that we won't be able to find parts for and no one will want to deal with it but I'm a believer, completely bonkers for the FD, off my rocker etc.... but there's also a good reason for that :) Congrats to FD owners because in 30 years we may see these cars selling for ONE MILLION DOLLARS :icon_tup: On a serious not MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAP HAP HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!! |
I looked at a mint 91 300tt earlier this year and it sold for a decent amount of coin. But the nice ones are dissapearing fast. I think you will still be able to build a rew 30 years from now. People will probably be re-chroming the housings etc. Merry Christmas to all of you!

In any case, the RX-7 will always have some level of interest and mystique because it's appeared so prominently in so many video games! That'll undoubtedly help its value too. :-)

I think it depends a lot on whether Mazda really comes out with a RX9 or whatever you want to call it in 2014. If they really do make a true rotary sports car similar to the FD and it has the looks/performance to match, the FD will be worth crap. Most all of us, me included, would march right down to the Mazda dealer and pick one up if they come out with something good. Otherwise I think prices will continue to rise, but maybe not at the rate some of you seem to expect. Not many people will ever pay $60k for a 20 year old FD when they can get a new or near new Lotus or Porsche for the same money.

i am the biggest FD fan and have owned 2 and though i don't doubt flynn's experience, i don't think there is going to be an explosion in value even in 20 years. there will always be that one person willing to pay a premium for the right color/mile/year but i think overall you won't see much fluctuation in pricing - $8-12k for your normally beat up example and $15-$20 for a nicely sorted example. My guess is it'll stay that way until the end of time :)

They're not making more, and most people are molesting what collector value they have.
|
a lot of things are no longer available but that doesn't automatically mean anything obviously.
To me a perfect example of modern car with collector value is the Z8; drop dead gorgeous styling with performance that's top of the class for its time. Or the NSX for its ahead of time technology and exotic look. Are FD's that special? To me, no, but i still love the drive the crap out of it! |
A few of us rolled down to cars & coffee in Irvine, did not think anything of it, we just went for fun.
When the group of us pulled in, there were plenty of turned heads watching us drive by. Cars & Coffee Irvine is different from other cities, the usual turn out are higher end exotics, concept cars, most not road worthy but driven in the wee hours of the morning, weird one offs and really nice vintage vehicles. The FDs that day, as a group, really made an impression which was surprising. http://www.cncpics.com/2012/February...3974&k=LDgV8ds |
Technospeeds are still one of the top 5 wheels every put on a FD. Car looks great.
|
Reading this thread made me very satisfied with my decision to drive to another state just to pick up an FD. The price was right and the car is in great condition with various extra parts as well. This car has definitely withstood the test of time and has held it's value very well.

makes me sad when people compare muscle cars to the FD. Yes they're both great machines, but there is always the appeal to being able to go fast in anything other than a straight line with an FD. To me it will always have the extra factor that a lot of the other cars that people collect because it is unique, and can perform.

I chuckle at those that say that FD will not be a sought after car because of its reliability reputation. FYI- People who buy a 20+ year old car that they always loved, are doing it for passion not reliability.

Muscle cars were extremely cheap in the late 80's early 90's and then their price skyrocketed. As those vehicles brought nostalgia to those that grew up in the late 60's early 70's. So the comparison is based on that is what the FD will bring for those that grew up in the early 90's. |
The imports will decrease their value but not by much. LHD will always carry a permium over RHD. However RHD isn't as bad as people make it seem. As long a you don't have a billion left hand turns at busy intersections with heavy and fast moving traffic.
Cruising on the highway there isn't a huge difference. It can actually be safer since you can hug the inside of your lane better. Parallel parking is easier too. But then there's the drive through's and passing. There's pro's and con's. I think at the very least FD's will hold their value. |

BTW it looks really good next to my Art Director's 15th Aniv Sapphire Blue Supra. Wonder who he got that from ;) |
Meiogirl - I would say the FDs definitely held their own at cars & coffee considering the other cars that were rolling by that day.

^this is true. i come to learn over the years that other car tuners have a great deal of respect for our motors more so than the car, cause you can swap any motor into a car these days. doesnt matter if you have a fb,fc,or fd. the respect i feels comes from the knowledge of what a pain in the ass our motors are to work on etc. and sadly that is why the rx7 will not raise in vaule. fd's are cheap now. and highly modified ones dont go for much either. a new civic goes for more. all of the rotary techs work on more than just rotaries now. cause there might come a time where not many 7s will be left. or no one wants to deal with the motors any more. unless mazda comes out with something new. we are the last generation of the rotary i feel. i enjoy my car for what it is. gets alot of attention and respect and im cool with that.
Hard to work on................LOL. These car are extremely easy to work on. Once you know what you are doing they are a piece of cake. I just put in a trans by myself on jack stands in 6 hours not rushing at all. |

Civic.....What? You can buy a nice 2000 or 2001 Honda S2k for 12k. You won't find a nice FD for less than 12k period.

Show off. Took me 8.
Couldn't find neo anywhere but CA and didn't want to wait on shipping so I picked up some Motul 300. The trans I put in isn't the best but I have a new Giken gear set on the way because I'm tired of ripping teeth off the main shaft :egrin: |
