fans stuck

hmm, posted this on "the big list" and got no replies. someone must know what's going on---

help, fans are stuck ON in my '94 PEP.

i have to pull the relay fuse under the hood every time i park, as they are running even with the key out. (it's had the recall performed)

i did the "dave disney" fan mod, so i have a switch that previously let me run the fans even with the key out. and the relays are jumped so the fans run at one speed higher than normal, so they are stuck on medium, but even if i undo my wiring they are still stuck on low speed.

if i hit the A/C switch they kick up a speed so i don't think that's the problem.
if it was the thermo switch i should be getting an error code 09 i think.

so what else would be causing my fans to be stuck on low? something is kicking the relay on full time. i haven't messed with the ECU at all, so it shouldn't be that test lead...

damn, nobody knows what would make the fans be stuck on low speed?

i've gotten two replies from people saying they have the same problem...

maybe it is the thermo switch, i'm trying to change it out to the miata one that will kick the fans on at 207F instead of 226F, but that thing is a real pain in the ass to get to.

Not sure about how the fan works after the mod. However, stock fans are designed to run for 10 minutes after a hot run when the key is removed.

relays are probably stuck. just tap on it a couple of times...worked for me.

have you ever left them on for a really long time to see if they stop? Isn't there a case when the fans stay on for up to 10 minutes after you stop running?

Just before my radiator went out, my fans would stay on after I got out of the car occasionally, but they would turn themselves off after a while - no harm done.

no, it's not just 10 minutes. i was letting the fans run like that for several weeks, then one day they ran until the battery died, and when i got a jump start they were still running. they run full time, whether the car is cold, warm, or hot.

now when i park i have to pull the fuse under the hood. then hours or days later i walk up to the stone cold car, put the fuse in, and the fans immediately kick on. i don't think the relays are stuck because i hear them click off when i pull the fuse, but i'll try tapping them.

the schematics for the post-recall wiring are here--

doesn't mean too much to me, but it does seem to indicate if the temp sensor malfunctions, the fans will be stuck on low speed.
