Fan's stopped working, what do I do?

Ok this is for a buddy of mine. His rad. fans just quit working on him. Noticed it at a stop light when his temp started to rise. Luckily there was a gas station right by where he checked everything for leaks and such. Found out the fans were not coming on. He has checked the fuse but it is good. What else could he check, he asked for my help so I posted this.

see if the fans come on with the a/c. this might help to narrow down exactly what the problem is.

thats kind of odd that they both just stopped. was he 100 pct sure that both were working before? if he was running on 1 fan its possible that the other just died. I don't know what else to check other than the fuses and fan relay.

When my fan died I got a great deal at MazdaRecycling. They are usually very expensive, but this part is not a big seller, so they should have a set pretty cheap.

Thanks Jonas for getting this started.

I had turned on the A/C to see if that would do the trick and was unsuccessful.

Yup, they both stopped working. They were working fine last night.

it is unlikely that BOTH motors went bad at the same time. It could be bad relays too. can you hear them "click" when they are supposed to turn on?

Aside from the clicking noise, where and how would you check the relay's?

Astro 09-20-02 07:39 PM

That happened to me before.
Really weird..
I switched relays with another 3rd gen..still nothing
then i got a manual switch installed and i just leave the fans running all the time.
FD's are posessed or something..i swear

The clicking noise is pretty much the "easiest" way to check for properly functioning relays. The relays are located on the PS front...near the overflow filler neck.

No luck for me .....

I would highly suggest you not to run your car with out fans unless the weather is really cold and you never get stuck in traffic. Try grounding the relays like mentioned above and see if they are clicking, if thats not it, try hotwiring the fans up to see if they turned on, perhaps you got an eletrical surge or something weird and it blew out your relays. Now would be a good time to do the fan mod so that you can control each of the 3 speeds of the fans.

good luck

BTW: I think that the stock fans draw the most CFM of all the fans out there, did anyone happen to know how much they draw?

What is required for the fan mod?

You can check the relays with a volt-ohm meter and the shop manual. I think someone here has a link to the scanned version on line. You should be able to turn the ignition on and the air on (without the motor on) and get the fans to come on. Also, the diagnostic connector on the driver's shock tower has a fan test pin. Again it's in the shop manual or someone here could tell us what pin it is...
