Fan relay rubber / bracket , harness question

Dose any one know if the harness is available? Is the rubber hats available by them self ?
Is there any trick to taking the rubbers off with out breaking them ? They are still flexible but pretty heated / harden Thanks !! |
First, the harness coming from the relays is part of the fan recall mods. That harness is only there to make the relays "hot" so the fans can run after you turn the car off. Read up on the fan recall, I'm not a fan of it and I typically remove that whole deal from the car.
The rubber covers on the relays aren't available separately as far as I know. They are, in theory, removable but they are most likely VERY glued on to the relays at this point so removing them would require destruction. You may be able to get a lower mileage, cleaner set of relays for a reasonable price that look a lot cleaner. Dale |
I've toyed with the idea of using the Self- fusing silicone tape to wrap and (hopefully) protect and support the rubber. Not certain it will help but can't hurt and won't cost anything.

thanks dale . i just finished the fan control thread.
the set in my photo IS the lower mileage , better condition relay+rubber lol you dont want to see my original ones they look like coal. anyways. when i remove my old one with the same harness. i wont be reattaching the extra harness. ill just plug the wires straight from the front harness. and eliminate the fan mod. is there anything else in the ECU compartment i should rip out as well ? i read the recall service guide and it seems rather complicated and i dont want to risk messing anything up there |
That's the only part of the fan recall under the hood. The other part is plugged in by the ECU in the passenger foot well.
Under the hood there's not much else that needs removal. Might want to go with an FC fan switch if you haven't done that yet. Dale |
Others have successfully used glue lined 1 1/2" diameter heat shrink tubing to seal up relays from the elements once they are connected together:

I just thought of another easier way. Once you have sealed up the relay with the heat shrink tubing, cut another 1/4 inch long piece of glue lined heat shrink tubing. Place that piece over the relay and the metal bracket tab that holds that relay. Heat shrink the relay and the tab together. The glue will hold everything in place.

Have you considered dipping them in black plasti-dip? The can one, not the spray on type. Mine look like garbage too and I have not gotten around to attempting anything with them yet.

The ones behind the ecu . Another question is I do have a fc switch. But some reason I feel like I'm only getting 2 speed. I let the engine idle with no electrical load. About 5~10 minutes the fan kicks on. And on and off repeat. With defroster and head light turn on. Same. Same speed. If I turn the a.c. on it kicks it up a notch. Either I'm missing low speed or missing high speed. I have a extra set if relays that's about half the mileage compare to mine. I can swap them 1 by one and see if anything changes |
The fans are 3 speed - low, medium, and high. Read up on my thread on fan control to learn more. Sounds like your fans are kicking on low, the car is cooling down, then it's kicking off, which is normal. Electrical load I don't think will contribute to fan speed, it will bump the idle up though.
Yes, if you just remove the harness under the hood the fan recall will be disabled. The stuff that's plugged in by the ECU takes all of 5 minutes to remove, though, it's not a big deal. For the dust covers for the relays you may want to hit up a pick and pull junkyard and see if you can find some from other cars that would work. Or, just get a good set of fan relays, they shouldn't be crazy expensive. It would probably be cheaper than the heat shrink! Dale |

You are correct. Tidies that area up a lot too, no idea why Mazda made that patch harness so damn long.
