Fan Mod Problem

Well I performed the fan mod today, and I hooked up a switch with a ground wire to the single un-used female spade connector by the ECU.

It works fine as far as turning the fans on high speed whenever I want, BUT it does not keep the fans on after the car is turned off.

I drove the car for 30 minutes with the switch on for most of the time, and it kept the car ultra cool compared to its normal temps with the fans on high at all times, BUT when I shut it off and left the switch on, it didn't keep running.

I then attempted it in my garage, waited 2 minutes with them on high speed, and shut it off. Same thing, fans turned off and didn't come back on.

Would this indicate one of my fan solenoids is not functioning?

I'm pissed, I wanted the fans to stay on when I turned off the car to help with heat soak. Nothing ever goes right with this damn car

That's odd. Normal procedure is to shut the car down with the switch on, and the fans continue to run. Wait 30 seconds, and then shut of the switch. The fans should drop to a lower speed, and stay on for ten minutes.

Since at least some of the fans are coming on when you turn on the switch, it isn't a solenoid problem. I don't know what might cause your issue.

For what it's worth, I used to run the fans after shut down too. I stopped doing this a long time ago. It wasn't worth it. Now, I make sure that I turn on the fans several minutes before I reach my destination. This allows them to cool the engine to 180 degrees before I turn the motor off. With the engine shutting down at 180, I don't really worry about too much heat soak. If it is hotter, I just pop the hood.

I agree. I think running the fans after shutdown is good when you're running over 100 deg. C water temps like the car does stock. With good fan control, you should NEVER be running that hot - my car is always in the 80's C temp wise. I think running the fans after shutdown just puts stress on the battery.

That said, do you have all the components for the coolant fan recall in there? There's the harness that goes between the relays and main harness that sets up the relays to run with the key off - if that's not there, it won't run of course.

I'm pretty sure everything is intact, including that little black timer box. Grounding the female spade connector does make the fans come on high speed while driving or with the ignition turned on, but no matter if I drive the car for 2 minutes or 30 with the wire grounded, the car does not keep the fans running after shutdown with the wire still grounded.

Oh well, I guess I'll just be happy I can now turn the fans on high all the time. It is 100+ outside here in Vegas every day, sometimes at night it still sits around 100. So atleast that part of the deal works. Last night my water temps driving around were significantly lower than usual, hovering around 89c when cruising around, and right at 100c after I shut it down.

Has the car had the actual fan recal performed by mazda? You need a harness and a control module for the fan mod to work.

Exactamundo. The whole reason for the "10 minute shutdown sequence" was for the fires that started from one of the smaller coolant hoses near the UIM bursting due to constant excessive underhood heat cooking them to a crackly crunch. IIRC, there should be a small black module box just upstream of your ECU, which is the fan relay timer.

Guys I have the box, but it still doesn't do it. Oh well, using the fans on high while driving around even in 100 degree weather is keeping the car cool as can be. Not a big deal to not have the fans come on when the engine is shut off.

I've seen that box go bad occasionally. I have a few extras. I'll let one go for like $10.
