FAN mod problem!!!
 

Ok so I did the fan mod where you tap into the two fan relays, and wire it to an SPST switch which I routed into the cabin yadda yaddayadd.

Now, with the car off, key out of the ignition sitting in my lap, I can toggle the fans, on off, on off, on off, for as long as I want.

Now, once Iturn the car on, its all gravy. I can drive around, and then flip the fans on when I want them to go on . Here lies the problem

They dont go off. I cannot turn the fans off once Iturn them on, even with the key out of the ignition. However after 10 min they turn off like the recall is supposed to do.

The only other way I can get them off, is to yank out the relay.

WTF is going on? I checked all my wiring to make sure it wasnt getting grounded somewhere, and everything seems fine.

Strange... Does it have the recalls done?

That mod was 1st done on a car with no extra recal fan control module.

use 2 separate gnd switch option .... may have to settle for just the low speed fan use.

The problem is that when you flip the switch to ground the second relay for medium speed (if you've run two switches because you've already had the OEM fan wiring update done), you're fooling the ECU into thinking the engine is really hot, because grounding the second relay is also grounding the water thermoswitch. Thus, since I take it that you've already had the fan wiring update done, the ECU automatically goes into the engine off/10-minute fan sequence mode.

I was going to wire up the relays to run the fans on medium as well, but fdjunkie feels (and I tend to agree) that if the ECU senses the engine coolant is very hot, that the fuel and ignition curves are dialed back some to help with the cooling. Obviously a problem if you're getting ready to do a run, shred some hot laps, etc. Thus, I'm fine with being able to run the fans on low whenever; if I want medium speed, I'll just turn on the AC with the blower on number 2 speed, which automatically turns the fans on medium.

ohhhh... so I should just run the wire to one of the relays instead of both? or two different switches so I can turn it on low with one, then switch the other and have medium since the fans have to be on low first before they will go to medium correct?

ok, so I'll just run the wire that does low speed. that should fix it then.

If you want to be able to run medium speed, you must ensure that relays 2 & 4 are already energized before you ground relay #3, otherwise it won't work. This means you need a separate switch for both wires; the low speed setup has to already be running when you ground relay #3 to run medium speed.

Grounding relays 2 & 4 gets you low speed.

Or go with a switch that has two on positions. I put a double throw, double pole, three position (on-off-on)mini rocker switch in mine. Forward position grounds relays 2 & 4 for low speed, middle position is fans off, rearward position grounds 2 & 4 & 3 for medium speed when the car is running (ignition to run, really, so you can run it with the engine physically off), or low speed with the ignition to ACC or off.

Typically, even in bad sitting traffic, the low speed keeps the temps at 180 to 185 F. The IC sure gets hot though, so no stomping it after sitting there idleing for a while!!

oh no wonder, im looking at disneys site again, and the relays he chose were 4 and 1? I followed the ones that he chose, so mine were on 4 and 1 as well.I dont know why he picked these, so I switched it to 4 and 2.Hopefully that should work.

Right, so the way this works is that there is a common wire that grounds and therefore activates relays 2 & 4. This is the black with green stripe wire. So grounding this wire through the fan mod switch kicks over BOTH relays, which gives low speed.

Now I gotta go look at my car to see if I really did relay 1 like Dysney, or 3. Anyway, if you only have an on-off type switch, simply grounding the black wire with green stripe will give low speed.

Also, reading your orginal post, you are having the fans stay on after shutoff, right? This occurs if you ground relay 3 for two minutes before shutoff. Are you SURE you did your fan mod to relays 4 and 1, and not 4 and 3?

Not to possibly confuse matters even further :) , but if he followed the Disney directions on his car that probably had the fan wiring update done (like mine), he'll get low speed using the Disney directions, but when he tries to get medium speed, it will only work when the car is off; when the engine is running, it will only trigger the 10-minute shutdown sequence.

well, I went out, switched them to 2-4 and I still got the same problem, so now I just have it connected to 4, and it works with engine on off, low speed. SO im settleing with that as I dont want to mess with this anymore as Its just confusing me more and more when its supposed to be working one way, and its not.

I just did the fan mod with Disney himself helping me. We just grounded one of the relays and got a medium speed with ACC on. I can't remember how he did it. I'll check this evening and see.

digging up a slightly stale thread... this is my fan mod switch that I spoke of above. Now I just need to repaint the center console...
