Fan mod?
 

I've looked up the info sheet on the fan mod and I was wondering what kind of an adventure this turns into. If some of ya'll have done it can you let me know how it went and what kind of time frame I'm looking at?

The "standard" fan mod is simple:

*pry up passenger sill
*pry off passenger kick panel
*run wire from black/green (?) wire hanging by ECU (or behind) to a switch.
*run a wire from the switch to a ground

There is a more involved fan mod on Dave Disney's site (don't have url right now) that switches the fans on any time you want. This seems much more sensical than the standard mod as the coolant is still circulating when the engine is running.

Of course, you can always just turn on the parking lights which will kick your fans on at a lower speed. After a long/hard drive, I leave the car idling with the fans on with the hood up anyway.

It took me about 15 minutes and works great!

You could actually ground the wire out and forget about the switch - I leave mine switched on/running all the time anyway, and haven't noticed any adverse effects...

By running the fans on all the time you are wearing youre fan motors out.Plus your motor needs to get to normal temps 180F so water can flow threw cooling system normally.

Pull your A/C relay and use your a/c button and fan speed knob set on 3 to turn fans on high. It tricks the ECU to kick in the fans, yet does not activate the a/c compressor. Select fan mode to blow on the floor so you're not getting hit with a breeze to the face all the time.

I'd much rather replace a fan motor than an engine :)

And the fans don't come on until the engine reaches over 180 (I forget exactly when)...

How about reseting the thermostat so that the computer will natually will kick them on at a lower temp.? I've only heard about this one have yet to see a fact sheet on it. I searched and couldn't find anything worth it. Also... not having enough heat in the engine bay is not a problem in south texas w/ a front mount blocking the air coming in...

I would not want the fans running all the time. Have you guys checked the Dave Disney fan mod? It's a lot more involved, including splicing into the fan relay wires, but you can turn the fans on anytime you want just by grounding the switch.

Of course, you can always drive with your parking lights on which causes the fans to turn on sooner.

How do the fans turn on over 180F if you have the fan modd wires grounded? This will make them run all the time.

I just read through it again, and what I'm seeing as being up to temperature must be the two minute delay...

We get Texas-like temps here in Adelaide, so I'm happy to run the fans all the time...

What temp do they turn on when you have the parking lights on? I just got the car and I've been turning them on when I'm going to be idleing for a few minutes or in traffic, but will this be enough?

fan mod can be done, assuming recall work was done that added a control box behind the ecu.

on some models (esp 93), results in instant on fans with switch. for others, 2 minute delay is typical. for most, it can allow fans to run 10 min after shutdown ... great for hot parking at work to reduce underhood heat surge aft shutdown.

the dave disney site mod will result in instant on fans, but not sure how it may effect the fan-timer trick if recall was done.

Similar to this, miata switch may not trip fans at 207F, but 221F instead, esp for later years. A disney type jumping of relay wires should fix this.
